Was hoping for closer to a flat million tbh. Every bit counts with the guys the Avs still need to sign. I'll trust Sakic knows what's up though.

A tad much was my first impression but ultimately it's good to have him back.

Was hoping for just a million, but I’ll take it regardless, he was great in the playoffs when we needed him.

Yeah great to have him back; but I feel the same was hoping we could get him and Helm back at $1 million each.

We'll need some youth ELC's this year to step up (Newhook for sure) for the absence of Burakovsky and/or Kadri. Getting another "hungry" veteran OGWAC for the 4th line rotation or 7th defenseman will help with keeping them focused.

Really glad to see it. Hope they re-sign Josh Manson, too. And I wouldn't mind seeing the Avalanche go back-to-back if they do re-up Manson because my two crummy local teams aren't there yet.

There was a report saying there were no plans to bring him back and that there is a chance hes going back to Anaheim

Quite expensive for a 4th liner, no?

Especially Colorado who seem to be very good at finding cheap replacement players

Yeah I think Manson is a pretty important decision and I would like to see a full season with him and Girard together.

Additionally, the availability of other RHD in free agency that would fit in the Avs system and cap space are pretty minimal. The only other one that I would like to pursue is Jan Rutta. The drop-off after that is pretty massive (Justin Braun, Erik Gudbranson, Anton Strålman, Mike Stone, Colin Miller, Matt Benning). Of course the contracts would be smaller for those guys which makes signing Kadri/Kuemper more possible.

League Minimum plus a couple hundred thousand for his leadership = not expensive. Cogs knows what he is and what he brings; he's like an extra coach/captain. His playing style is perfect in Bednar's system and helps teach the finer points to the younger kids. Look at O'Connor in the playoffs after playing alongside Cogs and Helm; he stepped up big time after a fairly under-whelming regular season (after his early season heater).

Its double league minimum for an easily replaceable player. He does bring good leadership though, you're right there

Disagree about: "easily replaceable player". Cogliano is still one of the fastest skaters in the NHL and one of the better penalty killers.

I have to say that I was initially skeptical about the Cogs signing; I thought he was over the hill and kind of a re-tread. I have been blown away by how much of a positive impact he has had on and off the ice for the Avs. I have always loved the assembly and deployment of the grinders on the Avs since the Podein-Yelle-Messier line. Guys like Dan Hinote have always been my favorites to follow. I see that type of impact from Cogliano and would bet that he'll be an NHL coach the moment he hangs up his skates.

Yes, technically the league minimum is $750,000 but most 30+ year old veterans sign an "unofficial" minimum of $900k-$1,000,000 per year to play on a contender's 4th line (Maroon, Perry, Bellemare, Simmonds, etc). Islanders got Parise to sign for $750k but that was different since he had a huge buyout. Islanders 4th line still is the most expensive: Cizikas $2.5m; Clutterbuck $1.75m, Martin $1.5m; so the Avs are well below that average for veteran grinders.

Comparison: Derek Ryan for Edmonton is also $1.25m; Nic Dowd in Washington $1.3m, Luke Glendening in Dallas $1.5m; Bozak in St. Louis just came off a $2m contract.
