How exactly would Murray be traded to the Leafs if Mrazek is not in the trade

OTT
  1. Brodie, TJ
  2. Holl, Justin
  3. Kerfoot, Alexander
  4. Muzzin, Jake
  5. Nylander, William
Additional Details:
In order for Toronto to take Matt Murray, Ottawa would need to take back some combination of Nylander, Kerfoot, Muzzin, Brodie or Holl.

I don't see how that would be fair to the Leafs.
TOR
  1. Murray, Matt
Additional Details:
Ottawa is not up against the salary cap and paying assets to dump Matt Murray on a team that is up against the salary cap does not make any sense to me.

The only reasonable solution for Ottawa would be to buy him out IMO.

Yet for some reason, according to Elliotte Friedman, talks have "intensified".

I'll believe it when I see it.

CHI
That is why I feel that Mrazek needed to be in the trade, or else, it wouldn't work.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

It took me less than 5 minutes, so no effort was needed.

I wanted to spark a discussion.

Well I would think Murray going to Toronto involves Ottawa eating part of Murray's salary, maybe muzzin could be involved but its not going to be nylander for sure.

I agree. I really really hope there's no truth to the Murray rumours. Doesn't make sense for Ottawa to pay to dump him and it makes even less sense for the leafs to aquire him. Honestly if it does happen I'd guess Murray 50% retained for FC.

Well according to a few Leafs CFACGM's the Sens will be trading Connor Brown and/or a 1st to take Murray. 🤭

Ottawa saves a ton of cash which matters to them. Murray is set to get paid 7 million and 8 million the next two years. They save nearly 9 million in real cash by trading him and retaining.

I see it as a 3 way where they trade and retain 50% and then that team trades him to leafs and restrains 50%.

Leafs pay 15 million in cash but only costs about 1.6 per season against cap each year.

I love Murray for under 2 million as part of a tandem with Campbell or Kuemper at around 5million a year.

Remember during the pandemic just before the 2021 trade deadline when Friedman floated a rumor about a non-playoff team trading some big-ticket American player to a Canadian team? It was all very breathless and earth-shaking and kept the credulous on the edge of their chairs until we all realized he was full of $h!t.

Sens save real dollars on trading murray, plus they want the cap space to sign giroux since they have to pay stuzel next season

for one that was Chris Johnston who had that rumor, and Frank Seravelli is also backing Fried on the Murray rumors by reporting that Ottawa is willing to include a major sweetener as in a high pick or a good prospect

If they are doing a high pick or a good prospect, they aren't retaining 50% but probably closer to 30%-40%. Perhaps Toronto is trying to find someone to eat part of his cap and willing to pay for that themselves.

Thanks! I couldn't remember the source of the rumor, and just assumed it was Friedman because I've never had reason to put much weight on anything he says. I remember his "breaking" news of some trade on Thursday one whole minute before it was announced; I'm sure he counts this as one of his reporting coups.

Do you by any chance remember the source of the tale that one GM offered Andreas Johnsson for MacKenzie Weeger a couple of years ago but the other GM turned it down?
