One Trade Fixes It and No Its Not Tkachuk

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 19, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lost in the mania of many Leafs fans to trade Jake Muzzin due to his cap hit is the fact that there were four teams* that were statistically tied for 13th through 16th in GAA among the playoff teams last season, and all Toronto has done so far this summer is lose Ilya Lyubushkin from its blue line. So personally, I'm not a fan of the Maple Leafs' trading Muzzin, and I think that Dubas' primary focus should be on improving the defense rather than weakening it.

I'm not sure that the Flames would be thrilled by this offer, but it's worth considering. If some addition to balance the deal in Calgary's eyes is necessary, assume that a prospect or pick or exchange thereof could be worked out.

I've heard that Sandin has been unwilling to sign an extension at roughly Liljegren's number, so I'm assuming that the figure shown is what would keep him in Toronto. To do so, Justin Holl would have to be moved, but that would be all that is necessary to be cap compliant with the team as it currently exists. I assume that he would bring a middling pick from someone, hence his presence on the LTIR list (for those who couldn't have figured this out for themselves).

No one currently on the main roster is waivers-exempt, but every forward on the Marlies is except Denis Malgin, so a 22-man roster is workable simply by shuttling young prospects back and forth with the AHL affiliate. Some of the potential promotions, or at least auditions, are shown on the imaginary Taxi Squad. (Note that there's enough cap space to bring up even the most cap-costly of the youngsters.)

Yes, I know that there's a weakness at RW without Nylander, but there's a weakness on defense the way that the roster is constructed now and trading Muzzin would only make it worse.

They still have a need for a top 4 RHD and Andersson would fill that need, so there is some sense in the trade from that perspective. Of course they would be putting in a hole in their top 6 which already has one which is why it wouldn't make sense but saying zero sense suggests that the Leafs don't have a need to fill. I guess if you mean by "zero sense" that the trade makes no sense in the sense that they are filling a whole by making a bigger one, then you would be right.

The loss of Nylander is without question a greater hole than what we have on Defence. Muzzin and Brodie still form a very good shutdown pair and the hope would be for Liljegren to take a step forward and fill a top 4 role next to Rielly. Or with Muzzin. That could be absolutely good enough. And then Gio with Sandin on the 3rd pair is way above average. So really our defensive needs are not very great. But losing an 80 point forward would be massive.

You clearly didn't watch the playoffs because A) Toronto was the hardest series Tampa played until the final. And B) the team that won plays basically the same style of game the Leafs do. So this is just another nonsensical make up a reason that doesn't fit anything but the result. TO could lose a 7 game series where they out hit, out fight, and outscore the opposition but lose 4 one goal games and people like you will say defence is the reason they lost.

JT doesn't have his tieing goal called off in game 7, maybe they win. Had the refs not given TO a 5-3 penalty kill in the 3rd period of a 1 goal game in game 6 and maybe it doesn't go 7 games. It wasn't the defence and that is just a tired and lazy narrative.

Best of luck with Murray and Samsonov. Let's reconvene at the end of April.

Yes, that's exactly what i mean. But Also a need is something you dont have, the leafs have a good top 4 so they dont need to force something as they have proven how good they can be with it.
I mean, id love to have andersson, just not at the cost of nylander or something like

You need to reinforce your defence. You were so easy to play against in the playoffs last spring.

How is a team that takes tampa to 7 games, mostly shuts down their top guns and loses by one goal in that game easy to play against?

The Leafs were the 4th best team in the league with the 27th ranked goaltending last year. Do you think Murray (2 cups) and Samsonov (still young and a former 1st round pick) will be worse than that? Murray had better numbers in the 2nd half of last season than Campbell did, and was on a much much worse team.

You're right, you're right. Focus on more offence. That's the best defence.

To me, the position that the focus should be on getting another forward and that the defense isn't the problem and that Murray and Samsonov will provide different results from Campbell and Mrazek is . . . odd. And hopeful. Oddly hopeful.

Yeah, i mean it's not like secondary scoring was their biggest issue the past two playoffs. Oh wait, it was!

I dont understand how anyone who watched the leafs, or knows anything about their stats or what cost them in the playoffs could possibly think defence has been an issue for like 4 years.
And you dont seem to understand that

"What does Nylander do for Calgary"?!?!? Seriously?

I expected something a little more insightful from you than that.

If you guys lose Tkachuk, I'd be willing to bet that you miss the playoffs in 2023, no matter who you get to replace him.

Nylander has 2 year left before free agency, if we loose Tkachuk and Gaudreau ot really sucks. But creating a giant hile in the dcore to add a short term forward doesnt help that

Yeah, that was my feeling when I posted this ACGM, hence the first sentence in the second paragraph of my Team Explanation. Nylander has 2 years left while Andersson has 4. That's a serious discrepancy.

You should know (since you didn't comment on it) that this idea was from an earlier ACGM in which the OP suggested Nylander for Andersson and Mangiapane (with window dressing).

Yeah, they shouldn't force anything but they still do have that need. Brodie and Reilly are good together but with a RHD Reilly could probably be better. Liljegren seems to be better with Giordano than Reilly so I would assume they are playing together. They need someone on a cheap contract for sure though, adding to the defense is something that they can address during the season once they have a better idea which pairings work together and which don't.

Naturally, there's always going to be defensive errors in any game for any team, but when you are the losing team and in Toronto that's what will be magnified. The Leafs defenders do have an issue with letting guys into the slot according to analytics I believe and Paul was able to power his way into their for a couple of goals, but yes in Toronto goalies and defenders will get ran out of town for mistakes in the playoffs.

It's wonderful how you dont even try to defend your points. You just say things and then brush off the responses with nonsense like this because you know you cant defend anything youve said. Brilliant bit i say

Paul was able to power his way through because the refs ignored a bunch of stuff 10x worse than what hill got called on to call back the tavares goal.
But either way, slot defence is a minor issue compared to depth scoring in the playoffs

I don’t think the leafs do either. Nylander has his faults but I’d still take him over Andersson.

Yeah, penalties always are costing teams but the Tampa-Toronto series was incredible odd since they started off with calling everything, then stopped calling other things but kept calling "hooking" penalties as long as the stick went anywhere near the gloves. Tampa wasn't that great on the powerplay and Toronto was worse but that 5-3 in game 6 came at a bad time for the Leafs. It's not something that teams can look at and hope to improve on for the next year though.

You’ll be nowhere to be found at end of April cool ; your team just finished 32nd in a 32 team league and you’re lecturing the 4th place team on what they need tears of joy . How about you try not finish last, again?

Leafs aren't in the market for a Dman, in fact, we could stand to move one. The value is probably right at 1 for 1 though. Personally I think the leafs should be moving Muzzin and possibly kerfoot to add a top 6 winger. Preferably one that can play centre. I don't mean Miller ir Tkachuk either. One of the guys in a tier below would do just fine production and cap wise.

Of course that's just me. Dubas and I seem to disagree here.
