What? San Jose isn’t trading a potential starter retained and a top six forward retains plus a 2nd for a 1st, my goodness. Sharks aren’t retaining on Couture either just to give up more assets for a top 6 player.

You do realize Detroit has two goalies that have something to prove, right?

Welcome to Capfriendly, do not take the post to much to heart. It will take some time for you to understand and evaluate talent.

That being said Wings have two goalies in Ned and Ville so I doubt they trade a 1st for a 2rd goalie and a 2nd round pick

Welcome to CapFriendly and don't take any of the comments personally. Every new user over values their favorite teams players at first. The best thing you can do is read as many ACGMs as possible including the comments and you will have a good sense of value in no time. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Tampa would likely do that trade, but S.J. wouldn't, so it wouldn't work unfortunately. Even with the age difference, Couture is a better player than Cirelli, especially in terms of offense. The large age gap does play a factor from Tampa's side of the trade, but Cirelli likely fits S.J.'s timeline in terms of a possible re-build better than Couture, who will be past his prime by the time the Sharks are contending again most likely. Ultimately though, S.J. won't trade the extra assets and retain for that many years on Couture, so the trade comes to a halt there.

They wouldn't "easily reject", as Couture 2 million retained plus two draft picks for Cirelli would be a very solid offer. Cirelli could reach Couture's level overall, but Couture is the better player now. There's risk for Tampa of course because of the 8 year age gap and the ceiling Cirelli may reach, but it's far from a easy reject for Tampa. Couture has at least 2 or 3 good years left, maybe more, and having Point-Couture-Colton/Paul down the middle is very strong. They could also even roll Point-Stamkos-Couture down the middle if they wanted, or more likely, have two very strong lines with Point-Kuch and Couture-Stamkos leading lines one and two, with either Paul or Colton with Names or Hagel on the 3rd. It would definitely give Tampa 2 strong scoring lines and a solid 3rd line. The defense of Cirelli would be missed, but Couture is no slouch there either.

It’s 25% retained and he makes 8M a year

I already addressed the age gap, and yes, the cap would need to be factored in with another move for this year. Starting in '23-'24, Tampa would actually save 250k once Cirelli's extension kicks in. Couture would still provide Tampa the better overall player for their main window, but given the age difference there is definitely a trade off. Tampa wouldn't just say no, but they may end up valuing the possible long term potential of Cirelli more. S.J. would be more inclined to immediately reject, as Couture is still better and they are adding 2 draft picks and retaining for 5 years, which is just not going to happen.
