Honestly, getting off of OEL contract and swapping Garland for Reinhart may be a decent move

I... kind of like this. Garland+Schenn+2nd for Reinhart+Gudas is roughly equal, probably slightly favours FLA. If we can offload five years of OEL for one year of Hornqvist, though, that cap space could be put to good use down the line.

Man $1 million retention for 5 years and no top four Dman coming back? Idk about this at all

Don’t think this makes the team better and doesn’t really improve cap flexibility

Problem is the retention and Reinhart contract eat up and additional cap space for Canucks to replace OEL. Gudas for schenn is a bit of an upgrade and Reinhart for garland is a bit of an upgrade but Van loses their 2nd best defender and has no way of replacing him

Fair point, we could use the money saved from OEL to sign a replacement d-man in the next couple of years. maybe we take a slight step back next year and the year after but it helps us in the long term i feel

Reinhart is a big upgrade from Garland, he's better than Boeser too. We lose OEL but the good part is that Rathbone will definitely have a spot on left D and Dermott gets the opportunity to play 2nd pairing which people always thought he would. Or we could trade or sign another left D but I honestly wouldn't, funny enough but our left D might be the deepest position in terms of young players with Rathbone Jurmo and Pettersson.

Not this year but the year after Hornqvist comes off and we could also make some moves to free up space like moving Pearson, Dickinson, Poolman. Reinhart is a big upgrade from Garland and he will be our top right wing, Gudas and Schenn is pretty much a wash in terms of value. The main thing is OEL is off the books. I like OEL and keeping him isn't bad because he is a good D-man but we have prospect depth at LD with Rathbone Jurmo Petterson, and OEL will never get a lot of PP time which is what he was originally paid for in AZ. The 1 mill retention is a hit to the cap but it isn't awful, especially if our left D is eventually occupied by Hughes and a couple young guys on cheap deals. With OEL and Hughes here for 5 years, all our young left D will never get a proper chance and their development will be delayed.

I understand getting rid of OEL contract, but who is going to play those tough minutes? we would still need a suitable replacement, don't think Dermott or Rathbone are ready for that type of role.

Van definitely does well here. Reinhart is a huge upgrade on garland, plus the cap flexibility this gives van is huge. That Oel contract is terrible, we’d be lucky to move it. This is a good trade for both sides

OEL is overpaid by 2 mill. He is still a solid dman and plays the tough matchups for VAN. He needs a better defense partner.

Rathbone might not be ready for 2nd pair minutes but he is NHL ready that's for sure. Dermott could probably handle 2nd pair minutes.

If Dermott is playing 2nd pair minutes, your probably not making the playoffs.

Last year garland scored 17 goals and 47 points 5v5. Reinhart scored 14 goals and 43 points 5v5.

Over the last 3 seasons, garland has 42 goals, 101 points in 194 games 5v5. Reinhart has 45 goals, 101 points in 20q games 5v5.

Garland to Reinhart does not represent an upgrade 5v5. It’s a lateral move from that perspective.

Both players have excellent analytics over the last 3 seasons 5v5.

Neither player plays much short handed time at all.

So, you are trading away garland who has 4 years left at $5 million for Reinhart who has 2 years left at $6.5 million essentially for Reinhart powerplay ability.

This would make a lot of sense if the Canucks had a bad PP, but the thing is, Canucks actually have a really good PP. miller, Pettersson, and Hughes all have a high power play points per game over the last 3 seasons. Horvat also has scored similar goal rates to Reinhart on the PP last 3 seasons (Bo is actually a bit better if a PP goal scorer)

Boeser is the only Canucks player that Reinhart is clearly better than on the PP and even then the margin is small.

So really, this trade keeps the Canucks pretty much the same 5v5 and slightly improved their power play by bumping boese to the 2nd unit.

The costs for this are a) getting the worse contract for top 6 right winger b) retaining $1 million per season for 5 years c) losing our 2nd best Dman and D) giving up a 2nd round pick.

I don’t think this trade is worth it simply to move off of OEL and slightly upgrade garland. Canucks are already short 2 top 4 caliber Dman. I don’t think they should trade away another one for such minimal gain

This is terrible. Reinhart is a more impactful player than OEL and Garland combined. Gudas > Schenn. I could see a Hornqvist + prospect + pick for OEL with retention depending on the pick and prospect going the other way but to trade Reinhart is ludicrous. But then again so was trading Huberdeau and Weegar for Tkachuk

He's overpaid by 2M today. What about 3-4-5 years from now?

Worry about that later, cause at least his contract is relatively buyout friendly. We don't really know how slowly or quickly his game will age
