Why would NJD trade for Wheeler? I wouldn't if I was GM of NJD. Severson may be average as defense men but I still value him over Wheeler (even if it is 50 % retained)

If he was that then NJD wouldn't have made the Marino deal this off season. He is a serviceable top 4 d-man. But at times are unreliable in the defensive-zone.

Now it looks like he will be a top 6 D-man or Marino

Severson has been our #1 dman in time on ice for last 5-6 years. So I have no idea where you are getting this from.
Marino isn't taking minutes from Severson...he is taking Subban's old role and probably stealing a few defensive situation minutes from Hamilton.

Severson is very good defensively...especially on the rush and on controlled d-zone exits.

That is not what I have seen. And for me, a NYR fan I wouldn't want him. But of course you probably followed NJD hockey closer, so of another opinion understandably but to me he is average.

I honestly don't know what I would trade him for, personally. I rather have Fox over him, and Trouba (despite his cap hit) and I rather have Schneider than Severson.

Was gonna write this, but would just add that Marino really isn’t a 3rd pairing D.
Getting Marino in just meant that Devils are gonna run one of the strongest RHD corps in the NHL for the year with Severson and remain as strong with Nemec drawing in for next season.
Apart from Calgary I cannot think of any team we’re Severson wouldn’t play on the second pairing.

Everyone watched Sevs have a really bad game vs Toronto and they hang their hat on it. I get it. But his numbers are much better than that. I for one think he wil give a great discount to stay (he has said as much) and at under $6M (I dont think he does that on the open market), i think we have to consider it. I know a lot of Jersey fans (maybe even half) dont like him, but look at his numbers. We have yearned for a good D since the Stevens years and it aint that, but its probably the best right side in the league right now, why mess with it? The Severson plus a 1st for JT Miller stuff is so damn old! It like watching Toronto try and move Jeremy Bracco for a ton!

They made the Marino trade bc they want to bring in Marino and have him learn the system bc the devils believe that he is the right d partner for Luke Hughes. Marino has a full year of getting used to the system and that allow Luke Hughes to thrive at his highest potential. Nothing against severson, it’s just that Marino and Luke Hughes is the perfect pairing and both of their play styles mix perfectly

Anyway I wouldn't trade Severson for Trouba or Schneider, and obviously not Fox. That is just my preference

Gosh, I remember those endless Dermott, Bracco, 2020 2nd for Severson trades.

Fox > Severson > Trouba

Schneider looked good too. Not sure where he ultimately ends up. Needs to develop more offensive aspects to really be top-pair guy.

Yeah for you maybe, but I am happy with Schneider. He is young and has a Trouba 2.0 mold over him.

Not even considering the cap issues. Just on the roster, for me I prefer Schneider

This is an ACGM positing about a Severson trade to Winnipeg.

How did it turn to Trouba vs Schneider?

Haha true. It is my fault I started saying I don't know if I would trade for him :P . But bottom line is no way they should trade him for Wheeler. Let's all be very clear on that.

I think he is alright, but I like the Rd on NYR.

With the Marino addition ( a steal BTW) the Devs have the best right side D in the league. That's why you do it. If you can take advantage of another teams misfortune you do. It has nothing to do with moving on from Severson. Thats like saying the Rags drafted BS to only trade JT. While that may true eventually, wouldn't you argue JT had a good playoff (elbow and all)?
