If Calgary locks up Weegar and we are unable to trade for a Top 4 Defenceman

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2022
Published: Aug. 5, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just an idea I had.

I'm not totally against acquiring Myers if it means sending Zaitsev the other way.

Zaitsev has the lower cap hit, but Myers is the better defenceman.

I understand the benefit for Vancouver but I think I’d rather just keep Myers

I think the Canucks do this deal but they also need RHD very badly so Im not sure if they would give up the better d-man.

Canucks would probably need a better pick than they are giving up. Myers is serviceable, Zaitsev not really

Zaitsev still makes 4.5 right? I don't think saving 1.5M to get a significantly worse defenseman makes sense for Van.

And I don't understand why Van would get rid of him in the first place. They need top 4 RHDs and Myers is that, albeit, at too high of a cap hit but RHDs get paid in this league.

You would get rid of Myers for exactly that.

Cap space.

And you would also get rid of Myers because he's nothing more than a scapegoated whipping boy in Vancouver.

And he is not a Top 4 RHD, so stop kidding yourself.

Saving only 1.5M but getting significantly worse at our weakest position isn’t really worth it imo

Being better than Zaitsev is not a high enough bar to justify paying someone Zaitsev's money, let alone an added 1.5mil. The reason you have to move Zaitsev is the cap crunch problem next season. They need that money off the books, going from 4.5 to 6mil for a guy you don't want in your top 6 regularly is insane.

Trade one of his RDs

Severson, Hamilton, Marino, Hughes, Nemec, Mukhamadullin, Walsh, Casey

Can’t play them all

Interesting that you want him so badly yet you think he's an overpaid piece of garbage. Myers is 100% a top 4 Defenseman in this league. The problem in Van is that he's essentially our only RHD. So he's playing minutes against teams top lines. He shouldn't be. I would take Myers in a #4 role at 4.5M everyday.

Zaitsev is Erik Gudbranson light. We don't need that again. Good luck with that one Columbus.

So, we should just spend a bunch of picks to dump Zaitsev?

And then ride the season out and see where it goes?

Is that the plan?

Though the canucks save a little bit of cap space, I don’t think it’s worth sacrificing more of our already thin RHD

You're right. So why would the Canucks waste 4.5mil of it on a pylon

I never said he was an overpaid piece of garbage.

I said he's a scapegoat and a whipping boy.

Two different things.

And I only want to acquire him for Zaitsev if we're out of options.

Also, what is your plan to get under the cap before opening night?

To save 1.5 million in cap space over the next two years by getting rid of someone who might also be a pylon?

The Canucks are already cap compliant 23 man roster with $748,000 in cap space.
