A different approach to Miller-to-CBJ

Created by: SammyB

Description
Basically, this is us delaying our window until 2024-25. The roster as it's constructed right now is a bubble team in the worst division in the league. If we're trading our best player, maximizing future assets should be the #1 priority, and taking on a bad contract is the only way to do that.

No team is going to give us the package we want for Miller if they can't extend him, and no team that can extend him is in a position to give us the package we want. So, we have to help them out.

Getting rid of Voracek's contract means Columbus has lots of cap space to play with next offseason, so they can extend Miller and make any other additions necessary.

For Vancouver, we'll have $16M in cap space next summer, enough to extend Horvat, Kuzmenko, and Peeke. Hoglander and Dermott will have to agree to team-friendly bridge deals or be flipped for assets.

In 2024, Voracek, Myers, and Dickinson come off the books, and the Canucks have $47M in cap space. ~$25M of that is used to extend Pettersson, Podkolzin, Sillinger, and Rathbone, but that still leaves plenty of money to use on big-name FAs.

CBJ fans, what do you think? Vancouver fans, are we okay with probably missing the playoffs for the next two season but not being bad enough to truly tank, if it means we're in a much better position to compete in the medium term?

Note: The return for Miller is Vancouver's initial ask in this scenario. I doubt CBJ agrees to that deal as-is, but it's a good starting point IMO.

if im columbus id rather just stick with the team they got future looks bright down the middle with Johnson+Sillinger and Voracek has been one of the most consistent playmakers in the league for a while now.

1 yr of miller is worth jeopardizing your future

peeke is a solid bottom 4 shutdown guy, cuelemans is a good prospect, sillinger looks to be a solid 30 goal scorer one day, this year is a stacked draft and i think CBJ misses PO's, and then ya i just don't think production wise miller will be much of an improvement over voracek and especially cap wise they are looking to dump voracek but by acquiring miller if he resign's he will get atleast the same money as voracek or more for longer term which they just don't need as they got a good forward core already and don't need to be cap strapped by miller/gaudreau/laine/werenski

Sillinger is the hardest of nos. That package in general is a crazy overpayment that the Jackets would not consider whatsoever.

They don't even need to dump Voracek. His contract expires when it matters and they've got all the money they need next year to re-sign their key players. If somehow another big UFA is available next year then maybe they'll try to dump Voracek.

I don’t think sillinger is a reasonable ask for a rental reguardless of how good the rental is. Sillinger is 10 years younger and has already shown a lot of upside that most scouts didn’t even think he had. He fixed his major flaw which was skating and has great defensive awareness.
I know it has been said before but if Miller is coming to cbj it would be for a first, a B prospect and a right shot defenseman.

Sillinger is not available no matter what Vancouver offers. By even mentioning his name you have fatally poisoned any chance at negotiation.
