Description
Greenway trade is a positional need for Minnesota. Risk on the leafs end with his down season last year (27 points in 61 games). Hope would be the he can be like Hyman/Bunting and use his size and forechecking ability to get pucks then benefit points wise from playing with Matthews and Marner.

Bunting to the second line makes sense to me. We keep putting playmakers or defensive players at 2LW. We need someone to grind because when JT and Nylander need to do that they get worn down and tired and don't produce as much. Nylander always seems to play better with a strong forechecker on his line that help give him space. He is good at picking pockets, transitioning, carrying the puck but the guy can't forecheck for his life and we need to stop asking him or an aging JT to do that.

On the backend, Holl and Schenn are similar players but we have to pay to benefit from the lower cap hit. For Vancouver I think they do it, they get a pick and a player with more upside who is a bit younger. Makes sense if they really think they have a window in the next few years which the Miller signing seems to indicate.

both teams say no, schenn is probably untouchable as of right now, his style of play and very low cap hit are exactly what Van needs

The leafs are not trading holl for a worse player and then adding to do it. Him being better is all the extra value Vancouver needs to make up for the cap difference.

Minnesota says no as Greenway/Ek/Foligno are a staple with the Wild. Greenway also has three more years, whereas Kerfoot will be gone at season's end.

Not to defend the trade but kerfoot being gone is probably a positive.

I don't see a world where Guerin (not everyone) would trade Greenway for Kerfoot instead of sending a 3rd or something for Kerfoot, Greenway really is not expected to be a scorer on the Wild, the Foligno Ek Greenway line is primarily a shutdown line and if they can provide secondary scoring, great, however, their role night in and night out is to go against the other team's top line and shut them down. I see them in a sense as a 1a/1b relationship with the Kaprizov Hartman Zuccarello line, where if there are high flyers (McDavid, Matthews, Mackinnon, etc) on the other team, the Foligno Ek Greenway line is line 1, and if it is more of a middle of the road top line the Kaprizov Hartman Zuccarello line is line 1.

All that being said, the role that Greenway plays on that line is lost in this trade, and really is destructive to the way that the team plays, not that they aren't necessarily equal value players.

-Minnesota's not giving you Jordan Greenway 1-for-1. He's younger than Kerfoot, signed for more term at a cheaper cap hit, and while he doesn't score as much as Kerfoot does, it's because that's not what his job is - although he's still good for 30-35 points, he was one of the top defensive forwards by GSVA last year, along with Marcus Foligno and Joel Eriksson Ek. I can't see Minnesota breaking up a top tier shutdown line for the extra handful of points Kerfoot might provide.

-Vancouver also is not going to give up Luke Schenn for Holl & a 6th. The Canucks are also a cap team right now, and that extra $1.15M in cap they're saving you in the swap is going to cost more than a 6th to them. If they're moving Schenn, it's most likely at the deadline with full retention to make him worth $425K and get back a strong return for him, not flipping him out for a similarly skilled player with double the cap hit.
