we sign him to an 8 year deal this season and the trade happens in the offseason

Sign and trades just aren’t a thing in the NHL. I think the last one was devon setoguchi.

Why would Horvat re-sign with Vancouver if they are just going to trade him in the off-season. Why wouldn't he just wait and pick his own destination when FA opens.

The 8th year is not a selling point. I’d prefer no more than 6.
