Only a win for the Leafs if they win the Cup, and Jones regains his form and is a top 2 dman, probably would need Toews to sign too.

Don't see Toews, Kane or Jones, let alone all 3 waiving for Toronto.

Toronto has too many holes, this doesn't really fill many of them, RD issue is technically better, but after this season, RW will be weaker with Kane's departure and Marner being gone.

The LW and goaltending is still atrocious.

and this hinges on Muzzin being LTIRetired.

I get the idea, but don't see it working either short term or long term, Chicago clearly wins out with 3 1sts and Marner.

Marners value tanks the second he plays a few games for Chicago. Unless chicago can instantly flip marner without him playing a single game for them I don't think they'd take this risk

Marner's a play driver, he's a little soft, but overall Chicago can easily flip him.

Retain salary and you're getting at least 1sts and an A level prospect, 10 picks (assuming these go through) in the 1st rd of the next 3 drafts is a great way to rebuild.

Toronto still somehow loses in every aspect of this trade though.

Ya it’s the 3 firsts that kill this for me. That wayyyyyy overkill. Remove them and maybe it makes sense as a win now move.

Problem is, Kane & toews (retained) and Jones are worth the 3 1sts and + on their own.

So, the deal doesn't happen without them, Marner and scraps is not worth those 3, especially with Jones on long term.

It's a weird trade, that could benefit the Leafs with a "culture change", but doesn't really make them that much better.

I've been thinking, rumors of Matthews wanting to play in LA have been spreading around for a while now.

I've been thinking a Matthews for Kopitar, Durzi and Byfield style deal, with either picks or prospects or cap dumps rounding out the sides. Addresses the RD, addresses the 3rd C issue, and gives them 2 good years of Kopitar and Tavares, keeps Marner and Nylander on the RW.

LW still suffers though.

Jones was damn good last year, check out his Jfresh card from last season and that was playing with inexperienced partners on a good team. He would instantly be a top 2 dman on the Leafs, I just don't think him and Reilly would be a good pairing though.

I like your Matthews idea. Would need to be a few prospects and a first in the deal probably but I like the base.

What I meant by regain his form and is a top 2 dman, I meant a guy who could be a top 2 on any team (essentially) like back when he was considered a top 10 D-man in the League. He's only 26 or 27 so maybe it happens, but I'm guessing he doesn't want to play in Canada because he doesn't want that extra pressure and the abuse from crazy fans, and not just the taxes (Calgary has low taxes, benefits from USD:CAD, not much colder than Chicago, and they have had a competitive team for a while now).

I think Reilly-Jones pairing could work similar to Werenski-Jones if Jones could be more defensively responsible.

If Kane doesn't want to go to Toronto, don't see Jones changing his mind.

I hate trades with more than 5 asssets.

Still some problems with this one, but an inner voice would like to see it happen just for sh*ts and giggles

I like your thinking but that'd be so brutal. I see Kopitar retiring a king

I'm not going to comment on the trade, but I find it funny to imagine Toews, Kane, and Jones all are Maple Leafs, not even anything bad, I just find it kinda funny, lol

Marner's value alone should get the trio of players coming back from CHI for him... BUT... to get the 2x retention - that costs 2x 1sts... to complete the Kerfoot/Engvall/Holl cap dumps - that costs a 1st.

Maybe that is over payment - MAYBE the Leafs could get this deal done using a 1st and a couple seconds or something, or add a prospect (or 2) from the Taxi Squad list. But I beleive that to get it done with certainty, the 1sts need to be there.

I have not heard of Kane saying "NO!" to Toronto. I call BS on that one. No player is ever going to say "NO!" to going ANYWHERE publicly. Not without making media wave and there being some backlash. I know he has a NTC, but to ASSUME Kane would say NO to a playoff team, especially when he gets moved along with long time buddy and running mate Toews PLUS he would be lined up along side his good friend Matthews - for 1 year I can see it happening. UNLESS he wants to spend his entire career with the Hawks and retire as a Blackhawk. But if THAT is his desire... He would have to retire after this year - BC NO WAY do Kane and Toews get re-signed by CHI in the off-season. Kane is still playing at a VERY high level and Toews is still a versatile and useful player, just not a 1st line guy anymore. To get a crack at the cup again which is what a move to TOR would provide both guys with... I don't see them saying "NO to T.O."
