Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 4, 2022
Published: Nov. 6, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
While this might be a tough set of pills to swallow, I think this would really help EDM secure both their team defense and, as a result, their goaltending while also shoring up the depth with a good mix of size, defensive acumen, and skill. It certainly comes at great cost- particularly given the strength of the 2023 draft- but I believe the window is open right now and the difference between this roster and the current one is substantial enough to push the team into the top tier of contenders.
Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Nyquist, Gustav ($2,750,000 retained)
  2. Robinson, Eric
Additional Details:
Foegele is a pretty much a more expensive Robinson so part of this deal is to save 1.15mil in cap next year without losing the kind of game Foegele brings. The other part is to get the offensive skill and speed of Nyquist.
CBJ
  1. Foegele, Warren
  2. Petrov, Matvei
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
  4. 2024 5th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
The value for CBS is in the 2nd round pick and another offensively skilled W prospect.

An additional 1.325mil is retained by a 3rd team in exchange for the 5th.
2.
EDM
  1. Murphy, Connor
  2. Tinordi, Jarred
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
This is a a steep price to pay, but I believe the team will be far more likely to be able to contend with Murphy on the right side in place of Barrie. His contract fits well within the McDavid contention window and, if Bouchard is bridged like Dobson (~4mil for 3 years), the cap isn't too much of an issue.

Tinordi adds a more veteran LD presence to swap out of Niemo and Broberg in hopes of mitigating mistakes when they begin to crop up. Murray hasn't shown capable of that.
CHI
  1. Barrie, Tyson
  2. Desharnais, Vincent
  3. Lavoie, Raphael
  4. 2023 1st round pick (EDM)
  5. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
  6. 2025 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
I think Barrie has value but I understand that others don't see it that way. I remain convinced that any team acquiring Barrie will be able to get an asset out of him with 50% retained next year.

The main value in return for Murphy is the 2023 1st. Neither Holland nor EDM as a team trade their 1sts very often so it takes special circumstances to do so- this is one such circumstance IMO.

Lavoie is a standard boom-bust guy that may benefit from a change of scenery. Not operating under the illusion that he's worth a lot.

Desharnais may not look like much, but he was among the AHL's best Dmen last year and, given his reach and mature game, could be a solid placeholder for CHI during their rebuild. Still not worth a lot, but CHI could use another RD behind Jones.
3.
EDM
  1. Bastian, Nathan
  2. McLeod, Michael
  3. 2023 4th round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
An offseason favourite!

This deal becomes less and less likely by the day given the way these two are performing together. Even if they don't sustain this pace, they're demonstrating their ability to impact the game and play with pace and assertiveness on a 4th line- exactly what EDM needs.
NJD
  1. Puljujärvi, Jesse
Additional Details:
I genuinely believe Jesse would thrive in NJ where possession hockey is the name of the game and where they could use size and reach higher up in the lineup.

Yeah, I think the ship has sailed on this one for NJ.

Even just implying that Puljujärvi > Bastian at this point is a stretch. McLeod has also been good, but people are hesitant to give him his props for obvious reasons.

Either way, NJ aren't the ones adding here.

Hawks accept, but I think you can get Murphy for less. If we have to take Barrie, who regardless of if he has value to other teams is absolutely a dump to CHI, I would want a 2nd for taking barrie and then your 1st for Murphy. So Murphy for Barrie, '23 1st (top 2 protected), 2024 2nd.

Can’t truly see Columbus moving Robinson right now, also don’t see Columbus having much interest in yet another wing prospect. They desperately need center help and have too many wings.

Putting aside the implications of the Hockey Canada incident & his draft slot, it's hard not to like McLeod in NJ. He's a perfect 4th line center imo. Still young with value contract ... Big, fast, aggressive, drives net, grinds corners, high FO percentage and his passing this year has been great, even if the finishing hasn't turned those passes into assists. He adds value & is a keeper. If Wood is resigned next season, what's not to like about a Wood-McLeod-Bastian 4th line?
