Getting Some Kap-Space

Created by: Jacobize13
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 18, 2022
Published: Nov. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Pens are in an interesting spot when it comes to its forward and Dcore. They have had their struggles but at the same time have had times where they looked nearly unbeatable.

Two players have stuck out this year (for the wrong reasons) are Dumolin and Kapenen. While serviceable players on any team and a real potential of bouncing back, they have both made some real "questionable plays" when in the line up.

If the pens could try and maximize these players trade value and try to get some draft picks in return it would certainly be a great benefit this season and the next to resign some other key players as well as to allow them to recall younger players who should be in the lineup.
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. 2023 7th round pick (NSH)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Sens get somebody who can play on their Left Side while some of the kids can come in and out of the rotation.
OTT
  1. Dumoulin, Brian
Additional Details:
Pens regain some draft picks.
2.
PIT
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Ana gets a young forward who hasn't worked out in Pittsburgh. (even though he is technically on a near 40 point pace) A bit of the Penguins scapegoat atm and could definitely use a change of scenery.

  2. 2024 5th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Pens gain a higher draft choice.

Certainly the Sens who are destined to finish out the playoff are giving up assets for incoming UFA.
Ducks might take Kappy but certainly aren't paying much if anything to help you with Pens. Lots of other teams would be willing to give players away to get outta cap hell.

The two players you picked definitely have had their problems this year. I guess my only question is does trading them solely for picks actually help this team win now?

I'll be honest. Idk if there are replacements available that would offer immediate assistance and I don't like the idea of a bandaid solution like a player for player flip.

At this point, I'd much rather have some of the younger Pens players such as Poulin, Pus, Smith and Co get their changes with the big club.

I also belive the Sens are better then what they have shown this year but one glaring issue has been their D core and their defensive structure and even if Dumo is a rental, he could at least eat minutes and not have the younger sens players caved in on a nightly basis.

In terms of picks, I don't think the pens would ever sell low on either players given how highly GMRH thinks of them that's why I picked 2nd rounders that are expected to be on the lower end of the draft but it were up to me a 3rd and or a 4th would work as well.

Anaheim isn't going to give up a second-round draft pick for a "young forward who hasn't worked out" and has a horizon of 2024 and a cap hit higher than all but four of our forwards.

Danton Heinen @ 1M AAV should tell you all you need to know about why signing Kapanen @ 3.2 M AAV was a BAD idea. There is no team in the league that's going to undo that mistake for you.

There's no way we get a second for Kap. If anything we'll have to give up a second for someone to take him
