1. Leafs need a RD
2. I can’t see Leafs paying this much up for a rental. They seemed to have learnt from the Foligno move. Then again you never know. Personally I wouldn’t do it and instead would love to get a guy like Marcus Pettersson who has more term + would cost less (and is one of the best defenceman at not giving the puck away while boasting very impressive entry denial numbers and defensive analytics)

I think extending Gavrikov is a realistic option for the Leafs especially with Muzzin's LTIR status. Also I'm not sure what RHD is available that truly pushes the needle for the Leafs. Gavrikov is a play driver and a shot suppressor who plays extreme minutes he is similar to 2019 Muzzin which was a huge add at the time.

Rielly - Brodie

Gavrikov - Liljegren

Giorando - Holl

TBH if Columbus is game for Sandin for Gavrikov I'd do that in a heartbeat if the leafs need to add a 3rd to push the needle again that's something I'd really consider

I don't know if there is a RHD that comes close to what Gavrikov provides on both ends of the ice, I'll take the best player available each time.

Think Gavrikov is overperforming atm. We need someone who's more versatile (Soucy)

Soucy has good underlying metrics but he's sheltered way more than Gavrikov is and takes significantly more penalties than he draws. Soucy would be a good piece if he was strictly a rental. I'd only make a move for Gavrikov if we could also extend him and give him a 5 x 4 type of deal.

I dunno how much it makes sense to acquire a guy and extend him right now. It looks like we're clearing term for Matthews / Marner / Nylander

Pretty safe to say that offer must begin with a 23 1st.

I do agree with that in theory, we really do have an abundance of cap space to work with even if they commit cap dollars past next year.

Matthews = 13,500,000 x 8

Marner = 11,000,000 x 8

Nylander = 8,500,000 x 8

Tavares = 7,500,000 x 2

Tavares likely takes a pay cut that would be enough to cover whatever raise Matthews, Marner and Nylander get.

A guy like Lundqvist fetched a 1st from Dallas I think Niemela and Sandin have comparable value to that IMO.

That's true, but we can see they weren't willing to commit money on goaltending past 2 years as shown by their moves this year

Of course you would be good with Sandin for Gavrikov, you win that trade in a massive way. Gavrikov is a below average 2nd pair defender. He's not remotely as good as Muzzin was or still would be if he were healthy. He's just a common name thrown around on here and everyone knows that TO is desperate and will overpay for everyone

Meaning you want TO to pay a ransom to take a player you aren't retaining.

Do you really think anybody here thinks one iota about Leafs fans as they go about their day? What a bizarre delusion. Maybe you should climb down off that cross and just talk some hockey.

Muh huh. Because all hockey fans spend all their free time thinking about Leafs fans, even when their team isn't a rival. It's a global conspiracy.

Don;t be so insecure, man.

The 1st is pretty much it. OFD and wingers are not needs, so none of the prospects move the needle for us. Adding them would just make the deal unbalanced against the Leafs without substantially helping the Jackets.

What stats point to him being below average 2nd pair guy? Most of the underlying numbers I've seen point to him being very very good. I guess he is less Muzzin and more Brodie I would say maybe he's not huge but is a quality defender
