Trying to come up with an even remotely feasible Karlsson trade

Created by: Fogz144
Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 3, 2022
Published: Dec. 3, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
OTT
  1. Karlsson, Erik ($5,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Let me know what you think. On the one hand Karlsson is playing great but on the other he's 32 with 5 years left. This squeezes the Sens pretty hard against the Cap if they want to resign both DeBrincat (duh) and Zub (imo a must-sign). Obviously the big piece here is Batherson, who the Sens would hate to lose - it'd create a huge hole in their left-wing depth. The only reason the Sens would even trade for Karlsson would be to (hopefully) cement the top end of their D-corps for the future, but frankly I think they're better off trying to find another version of the John Marino trade (which they should have pulled the trigger on).

um I don't think this is quite enough for the sharks to retain like 30 million

San Jose and EK65 both decline.

Try again.

There is no scenario where Grier retains nearly 30million. That simply does not and will not happen.

That said the offer is pretty decent if you add a 1st

I think trading Batherson for a top 4 Dman can make a lot of sense, but they need to get someone of a similar age as the rest of the team. Ideally no older than 27/28. Love Karl, but unless they were getting him for relatively cheap cost to acquire, I think the age and term make it hard to work, and I think his resurgence killed that kind of deal.

San Jose has no reason to sell low on him and it's not in Ottawa's interest to buy high on him.

I dont think the Sharks retain more than 3 mil in any trade. Nearly 6 mill is just too much with that term. If a team wants more Salary retained there will have to be a 3rd team.

I see San Jose retaining $2.5 mil a year but not almost $6 mil. Could have a 2nd team retain some, maybe Arizona takes $1.5 mil to make the cap hit $7.5 mil which is much more reasonable.

Yeah and if that's the case I don't see a trade working out. I don't think Ottawa is well-served by sending a first with this and they can't take much more than 5.75/year back. If you swap the 2nd for this year's first then everybody will have felt like they lost, which is maybe the only way this kind of trade goes through.

There is absolutely nothing remotely feasible about nearly 6M retention for 5 years. San Jose would literally be paying him 20M in actual money not not play for them

Karlsson would come back. You’re crazy if you think he wouldn’t

1. As a multi-millionaire, he'd probably rather live in the sunny cosmopolitan Silicon Valley of California than in the winter apocalypse of Ottawa, Canada.

2. EK65 is playing 25 minutes a night and scoring more than a point per game in San Jose.

He's San Jose's #1 defenceman and this is his first season not playing second fiddle to Brent Burns.

3. As the former captain of the Ottawa Senators, he would want to come back and be named captain again.

That means somehow taking away the captaincy from Brady Tkachuk.

4. Ottawa is actually lower in the standings than San Jose and San Jose destroyed Ottawa last time.

5. It makes no sense for EK65 to want to be traded to a team that is still run by the same people that ran him out of town 4 years ago.

He ain't coming back.

no team is going to give up top assets for EK even with 50% retained, just because he is having a good year does not mean he will play like this all year or for the remainder of his contract and Batherson is worth far more then EK

That kind of retention makes it UNFEASIBLE

As much as I'd love Karlsson, I would also not do this trade

You're right. Karlsson has repeated many times this year that he is finally comfortable in San Jose and happy with his role on the team. It took moving Burns to make him THE guy but it's worked out well and Karlsson loves playing for Quinn. Also Grier and Erik have a very good relationship and Karlsson has frequently stated that he likes the direction Grier wants to go in.

Also Karl has a beautiful mansion near San Jose and many close friends on the team now. He is staying in San Jose unless a contender offers an incredible package that doesn't require much retention which is highly unlikely.
