Initial Creation Date: Dec. 22, 2022
Published: Dec. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Couple notes:

Canucks targeting young players under 25 in any deal. Schenn, Horvat, Garland biggest assets (trading Kuzmenko would be stupid).

Horvat trade Canucks want back a young RHD, a centre, and a draft pick. Barron or Kovacevic, Dvorak, and a second is fair value for Horvat. Horvat replaces Dvorak as 2C behind Suzuki.

Foote is stuck in a depth role behind Perbix and Cernak. Similar to the Bear situation, Canucks send Schenn who is the equivalent of a late second or third (cheap, physical, RHD) and a fourth rounder.

Garland is signed for the next four years or something on a good deal for a winger. Poehling is a good young centre who would fill the role for the Canucks. Garland is easily worth a second rounder.

A fourth coming with Schenn I'd do, however think it comes back to bite TB in the a$$

-Why is Montreal trading a pick and a prospect for a rental? If they really like Horvat, why not sign him in the summer and hope the fact that you're running a lesser team in 22-23 gives you a better pick?

-If RHD Cal Foote is buried on Tampa's depth chart, why would they trade him for another RHD? Wouldn't it make more sense to move him for a player at a position they don't have the same amount of depth at?

-Pittsburgh doesn't have the cap space to add Garland's $4.95M cap hit once Jeff Petry comes back. I could see them potentially sending back a Kasperi Kapanen or Brock McGinn and trying to make the numbers work, but I think if you're trading Garland mid-season you're gonna have to take a sizable contract back.

Hot at gets a far better return

Why are we trading Garland for a fringe NHLer? That’s terrible asset management

The value in the Bo trade favours MTL but MTL still declines. Trading Barron or higher end picks is not in our cards. I'd love to have Bo but we're not in a position to give VAN the assets they'll need to make a deal.

1. Montreal is harder up for RHD than Vancouver is
2. Barron has a lot more value than Kovacevic so if you think Kovacevic is worth a 2nd then Barron is worth a mid 1st (15-20 range)

I think a deal could be made but I don't think it would make sense for the Habs to go after Horvat and I don't think the Canucks would like the offer from the Habs either. I think if the Habs made an offer it would be something like this:

2024 1st (unprotected) + Mailloux or Roy or Kidney or Ylonen + 2023 2nd + an expiring contract (Drouin or Dadanov half retained)

I like the value for the Habs except, there is no way Barron is moving. He's our only legit RHD prospect, he's pretty much untouchable.

Not a big Schenn Fan , however TB hasn't used less than 9 defenseman in a playoff season since being swept in 19 . So going below that number is a risk hopefully they don't take

That Horvat trade is the kind that gets a GM fired... A B prospect, 3rd liner, and a second doesn't get our captain who is playing out of his mind. Why would Montreal even need him anyway? They aren't making the playoffs this year
