selling and retooling

Created by: bagelbob
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 13, 2023
Published: Jan. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
the major question with this team imo is if sorokin is willing to sign an extension. imo if he won't do it this offseason he needs to get traded. i won't do a trade here because this is just supposed to be the deadline. regardless this is probably more aggressive than some people want to be but it needs to be done. lmk ur thoughts

i like nelson but i think that his age makes this an overpay from colorados side. He's atleast 3 years older than the rest of the core top 6 and to burn our only center prospect and a 1st seems too high

Edmonton declines. They aren't giving up their 1st for a Mayfield rental.

I agree with you here for sure. Only caveat would be that $2M retained Nelson probably inflates his value. Don’t think that it’s a great trade fit for COL though.

Change Newhook to Olausson and I think Colorado stays on the line. They aren't going to move on from Newhook at this time though.

if chiarot/savard are any indicator someone will, edmonton was just the team i’d seen most that was looking for a defenseman

Nelson isn't a good fit in Colorado. The most important attribute for their forwards is skating and Brock has never been fleet of foot. At 31, that's just going to get worse and worse over the duration of the contract. He's a hell of a player, just not a good fit for Colorado's system.

honestly it doesn’t really need to be, i was just looking for a team that might be trading for a 2C and colorado was the first team i thought of. more just looking for a value assessment, i figured him at 4mil for 2 more seasons and a playoff run is probably worth a first and a good prospect/2 firsts but wanted to get other people’s feedback

Biggest issue for me in trading Brock is that somehow the offense becomes even more pitiful. Whether it's Newhook or another forward prospect from another team, I don't love the idea of having to replace a perennial 25 goal/55 point kind of guy like Nelson. You have a decent 1st line by the sheer willpower of Mat Barzal, but behind that it's two 3rd lines and the ghosts of a 4th line - they're gonna lose every 2-1 game going forward. Even if you want to retool, I think there's more value in keeping Nelson around to have a second scoring threat than whatever you'd get out of that late 1st rounder & Alex Newhook.

Devils accept. Take Blackwood instead of retaining.

Maybe someone will. But it won't be Edmonton.

i disagree, this team in its current form is not a serious contender and brock is their highest value asset that they would realistically deal (aside from sorokin who if he doesn't sign an extension this summer i assume will also be gone). if they keep nelson around, who are they actually trading that has any real value? losing every 2-1 game next year is to their benefit so they get a better pick and thus more talent in the long run. imo they need to sell high after these past few nelson seasons. it'd suck to have him leave but the team won't be cup-caliber these next two years imo, better to move him now when his value is at probably the peak of what it'll ever be
