Aging injury plagued veteran who likely only has a few years left of his prime and you expect a king's ransom in return?

Love karlsson, great story. Don't want the contract I just can't believe he's be productive like this going forward.

A 32yr old dman with a cap hit of $11.5M for the next 4 seasons and he hasn't played more than 56 games in a season since he was traded to San Jose.

TBH this isn't far from the truth, but for pick discrepancy. SJ would send maybe a 3rd and a 6th back for those draft pick upgrades...

The Red Wings might have to do a little better than Valeno, though.

Neither team does it. Detroit doesn’t need him and San Jose isn’t retaining that much for that return

It doesn't matter how good Karlsson is this season, the long term liability of his contract (even with retention) is too high.

Karlsson at 25-35 percent retained with no other bad cap to San Jose is not getting a big return like multiple 1st, 2nd, etc round picks. The last few years he has been extremely injury prone. Teams cannot risk him getting hurt again. In a league where very good players without Karlsson's risk and term got basically given away last offseason, cap is too risky.

It's a very difficult trade to pull off where it makes sense for both sides. The fact that we already know Alfredsson is going to be involved with the new Sens ownership, and Pierre Dorion hasn't found a way to acquire Karlsson says something about how difficult of a trade it must be to figure out.
