It doesn't matter how good Karlsson is this season, the long term liability of his contract (even with retention) is too high.
Karlsson at 25-35 percent retained with no other bad cap to San Jose is not getting a big return like multiple 1st, 2nd, etc round picks. The last few years he has been extremely injury prone. Teams cannot risk him getting hurt again. In a league where very good players without Karlsson's risk and term got basically given away last offseason, cap is too risky.
It's a very difficult trade to pull off where it makes sense for both sides. The fact that we already know Alfredsson is going to be involved with the new Sens ownership, and Pierre Dorion hasn't found a way to acquire Karlsson says something about how difficult of a trade it must be to figure out.
