An optimistic next few months for the San Jose Sharks

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 7, 2023
Published: Feb. 8, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. San Jose wins the draft lottery and takes Connor Bedard at 1st overall.

2. The Timo Meier trade during the summer time is the home run that GM Mike Grier so desperately needed.

3. William Eklund and Thomas Bordeleau shine like diamonds during training camp and secure roster spots in the Sharks' Top 9 for next season.

4. Both Kevin Labanc and Luke Kunin rebound the following season and show flashes of what they were like during the prime of their careers.

5. EK65 continues to show himself as the best player on the Sharks by far, logging more than a point per game while playing at least 25 minutes a night.

6. Mike Grier decides to send Vlasic to the Barracuda for a one week confidence-building conditioning stint early in October after Vlasic's NMC turns into a M-NTC.

7. After the conditioning stint, Vlasic establishes himself as a reliable defence partner for EK65 on the top pair.

8. With the Doug Wilson era now in the rear-view mirror, GM Mike Grier sets his sights on a future of respectability and competitiveness for the Sharks going forward.

Do you think Holtz is the only one on the Devs Grier is eyeing? I know the Eklund connection is huge. From what I have read you guys are in biggest need of Cs and D. Does Shakir Mukhamadulin (6'4- 185), LHD with a good shot who likes the right side make any sense? Your ask is not outrageous, but because the line is now deep for defenders in Jersey, wondered if Shak with more than you have suggested fro a Holtz pkg.

Muk/Casey instead of that 2nd here would be great.

It's going to be so painful losing Meier though with how good he's playing with EK and being only 26.

Meier playing with Jack Hughes should be electric.

I gotta think, if Devils and Sharks ever did link up on a deal, there would be a dman included.

As for Holtz, I know he will continue to be stapled to these trades until Meier is moved, but I am hoping people realize how unlikely it is that he moves.

Maybe he's not a player the Grier wants, but I would expect him to be available especially if Nemec & Hughes (for obvious reasons) are untouchable. What do you do with Mercer/Zetterlund once Holtz is in the lineup?

Got it. Personally I'd give up the 2nd instead, these 2 are developed already, unless there is no room (very good possibility). Pronman noted that Muk was a higher prospect than Holtz this is why I asked. I understand the Holtz connection to Eklund though.

Sharongovich-Hughes-Timo
Palat-Hischier-Bratt
Holtz-Mercer-Zetturland
Jeannot (RFA pickup)-Mcleod-Mercer

Siegenthaler-Hamilton
Graves-Marino
Hughes-Smith-Nemec

Bahl/Ohotyuk extras or traded
EDIT: Fwds-Clarke, Thompson thx 10506

I think a very good 3rd line can spread times around and make us tough to play against

We are losing Tatar, Wood, and Haula…so should be room for Holtz, Zetterlund. Ultimately, Boqvist is probably the most likely to be forced out of lineup if we add a forward.

Also, Devils don’t really have “lines” other than the 4th line (Wood, McLeod, Bastian…the “BMW line”). The rest of the top-9 are constantly flipped around, even during a game. Part of it is gamesmanship against teams shadowing Hughes…part of it is our coach is indecisive. But it’s worked thus far.

Top-9: Hughes, Hischier, Mercer, Bratt, Palat, Sharangovich, Holtz, TBD, TBD (Zetterlund, Boqvist, Clarke, or Thompson…eventually Gritsyuk).

4th: Wood/Foote, McLeod, Bastian

If the Meier trade is: 2023 1st + Casey + McLeod + 4th (suggested trade in my latest AGM), this is how I'd want the forwards to lineup in 23/24:
Holtz - Hughes - Mercer
Meier - Hischier - Bratt
Palat - Sharangovich - Tatar
Zetterlund - Boqvist - Bastian
// Foote, Thompson
