Caps Splash - Sens fans thoughts

Description
Truly, I have no idea if this is an even trade for Sens / Caps. I am going into this assuming most Sens fans will say no...

According to Seravalli, the Sens "could look into interest for DeBrincat". He went on to say that a return would be below what the Blackhawks got for him (reminder: 7th overall pick, No. 39 pick last year, and a 2024 3rd).

In this trade, the Sens get:

2 1st round picks (which would probably be late-ish I guess - worst case)

Connor McM - I am not as high as some people are on this kid but still think he can be a 2c (worst case 3c). He did have great stats last year for a rookie (especially for you analytical ppl)

Chesley - slipped to the Caps last year - analysts are quite high on this puck moving RHD (18yo) - having a decent year in NCAA

Mantha - I truly believe he has been mismanaged by Lavy - I still see him as a top 6 forward, despite the misuse

This trade assumes Caps could resign DeBrincat for ~8x8.5mil (as Seravalli referenced)

This is one asset too much imo. OTT can choose 3 out of 4 of the picks, McM, and Chesley.

This is a big man's trade right here! (ironically, cat is tiny) I'd love this kind of scorer added to the top 6.

You read my initial thought - I was thinking the same thing, but was trying to avoid bias lol

My ideal trade would be 2023 1st, McM, Mantha, Chesley

But yeah anyways - thanks for feedback.

@NovaSpartan @capsfan2121- thoughts on this (as we have chatted about DeBrincat). Yes probably an asset too much - but trying to avoid the bias)

I would make this deal as is, but we prolly could get rid of one of the firsts and if need be add a second or third.

Only issue we could run into is the sens having no interest in mantha.

Exactly my thoughts. My version of the trade is up

In my opinion, if Ottawa looks to trade Cat, it will be a hockey trade for another Top 6 forward or a Top 4 RD. They’re looking to compete so a trade for picks/prospects wouldn’t really make sense.

If it helps, in my opinion, McM will be ready to play top 9 next year and Mantha still is a top 9 (at minimum) forward. Chesley is a ways away (only 18). And then you still have a 1st in a stacked draft class.

But I understand what you mean

I don't think any reasonable Sens fan would argue with you in terms of trade value here, but if they have to move DeBrincat, I think it'll have to be for a "hockey trade" where they get a good, young NHL RHD in return. Sens really can't afford to just take a step back in their rebuild at this stage

Ah got it - yeah the Caps might not have the pieces the Sens need then

The Caps have Iorio, who is 20 and shaping up to be a top 4 puck-moving RHD. He has dominated in AHL this year and should crack the NHL roster next year. But I would assume he is almost untouchable due to the Caps having really no one else in the near-term pipeline for RHD.

Yeah I am doing it as well

I am hoping Mantha have a bit of a rebound next year, worst case scenario his contract expires. He's a downgrade on DeBrincat but Sens save 3 M$ here that should be invested in getting a Top-4 RHD

And with all those assets acquired, it should help to go after that said D-man

makes sense. prospect like that is hard to move. all that being said, as a couple other people pointed out, these are assets that could probably pretty easily be flipped for the dman the Sens are looking for. If we assume that’s what the Sens did with the assets they got back from Washington in this deal, then I’d be pleased with it
