Do you know how good Lane Hutson has been doing. Do you think he could be a player in 2023 ( if he isn't committed to university )

Thanks!
Kinda based it off this: VAN has a bare prospect pool, they already have a top 5 pick, here they sacrifice pick number 13 but gain a late first and two seconds. Quantity over quality. Then, two younger roster players who aren't needle movers, but have breakout potential.

He should win the Hobey Baker imo. Fantili is putting up historic numbers as a freshman but he's on a pretty stacked team. Hutson is doing so as a defenceman on a decent team.

However, I think Hutson plays another year at least in the NCAA. Rather him be too ready than not ready enough.

Definitely makes sense for the Canucks to keep their top 5 pick and move back with the Islanders pick. They have a really weak prospect pool and I'd take a late 1st and 2 2nds over a mid round 1st. Deal makes sense value wise too, comparable to Arizona/San Jose deal last draft (11 for 27, 34, and 45). Great proposal!

Yeah it makes a lot of sense for them to move back with the Isles pick if it doesn’t end up being the 2024 pick

Name me the Last Hobey Baker Winner to not turn Pro right after.
They dont all make the NHL but whether its AHL , SHL , Liiga or even DEL they all turn Pro
Because Survey Says ,You dont stay in a league wasting a year when they got nothing left to teach you as Austin Matthews reminds us when he left the USHL system to play in mens leagues before his draft(as many Europeans have always done)

So if it happens it will literally be a first time in 41 years its been awarded

Cool. Have you factored in the academic side of it at all? Maybe he wants to get closer to a degree and stays at university

I'm not all that sold on Hoffman still - he has 9 points in his last 9 GP but 4 of those are secondary assists. It's also worth nothing that he's getting 18+ minutes per night now with half the Canadiens' roster on IR - he had 12 points in 30 GP prior to this run when he was barely getting 14 minutes per night, which is probably the deployment he'd get on a healthy contender.

That being said, I'd pull the trigger on this deal - both are older players paid more than their production, but Hoffman is more of a scorer than a playmaker like Bailey - I'd make the swap and hope that both players take it back up a notch in their contract years.

I factored in that in 40+ years no one's ever done it
You're arguement is maybe he will , sure i get that and i might win the Jackpot on a Lottery but in 34 years i havent .
But common knowledge says he turns Pro Statistically if he wins that award.
That said no guarantee he win , he could be injured tomorrow which would be the only way to stop him at this point.

Its like the AHL's stat of "since 1995 we've had 94% of our AHL All Stars turn pro in the NHL " listing over a couple dozen.
Yet still NSH former pick and current AHL All Star Anthony "Laval Rocket" Richard i still dont buy as a credible shot at the NHL.
I'm probably right to doubt it but Statistically the odds swing so heavily in his favor the failing is the exception and success is the rule.

Playing devils advocate is fine but
Unless you had reason to believe that like Jordan Harris making public statement he's finish school and wouldnt sign
There's no logical reason to assume that he will until he does.

Personally i'd love for him to lose to Farrel and have an excuse to stay another year to overachieve in the top NCAA program period IMO , but thats unlikely.
Its more likely he'll turn Pro and join MTL a few games after the Frozen Four before likely playing in the WC in Finland /Latvia after for Team USA along side Farrel .

Most dont follow the NCAA , i do
Trust me when i say its better for a Rookie who's top 10 in the NCAA already to turn Pro
If we're full at the NHL level though that could present a real issue which is why the Frozen Four , Hobey Baker and IIHF WC results for him will factor in big to where he turns Pro.
At this point though i would love for Farrel or Fantilli to win it and Hutson to get another year in NCAA as our LD is log jammed and we could use the time to move out Eddy and Matheson

Cool. I respect your opinion, but I'd much rather wait like other teams did for Fox, Makar, Hughes, Sanderson, etc than rush in an undersized second round pick. Nothing wrong with being patient. If you're 34, you should know that.

I think both are somewhat equivalent. Hoffman is on pace for 45 points this year and last, and Bailey is hovering around the same. Montreal moves a guy out who fans don't really like and NYI saves half a mil and gets a goal scorer in the process
