Two 1sts is steep but Nelson is a 1st line center, his contract is a bargain

Don’t get me wrong, Nelson is a good and useful player having an awesome season. But he has term and is on the wrong side of 30. Solid amount of risk with that contract.

He’s not a top-line center because we have Bo Horvat and Mat Barzal above him, two centers who would be the 1C on plenty of other teams as well. Nelson is definitely a 1C, the isles just don’t need him to be

Nelson is utilized like the 1C on the isles, he gets more ice time than barzal, although barzal is better. Nelson produced like a top line center and he scores goals at an elite rate

Then by that logic girard is a top 2 D, the players in the trade aren’t the problem. It’s that this ACGM suggests that the difference between the two is a first round pick (assuming one of them was to pay for mayfield which is also really steep)

I doubt that the Avs would give you Girard and the 2024 first for Nelson and UFA Mayfield, but I know that we wouldn't give up our starting goalie whom we just signed to an extension in exchange for a UFA backup, never mind the hilariously inappropriate second.

A fun thought exercise I like to do is what players on my own team would I trade for another player on my team, example as an avs fan, if I were to trade for Makar it would start with Mackinnon and probably around a third to even it out. Now if you apply that same exercise to the islanders would you trade Dobson and a first for Nelson? Baring in mind that Dobson is only a year younger and signed for two less years and a million less. The gap between Nelson and girard isn’t a first round pick.

Nah, he's a 2C that can score which is a great asset but you're getting a cost-controlled puck-mover for four more years and two firsts for a 2C? No way. In terms of value, a Mayfield rental and Nelson at full price for two more seasons is an overpay. It's not a deal the Avs would make anyhow but the value is off.

Horvat isn’t a 1C either. Guys that have a combined zero 60pt seasons (albeit they will both hit that this year) and are 31 and 27 aren’t 1C’s. This is a very easy no for COL.

I like Nelson as a 2C for the Avs. This is just too much to ask. And I think the avs would need some retention. There was a good acgm a while back from an Ny i fan suggesting half retention.
