To quote Lou, I think Miller's contract is too much and too long for Waddell's liking.

If this does happen, expect Vancouver to sign a RHD in free agency for ~7m, probably Larsson (edit: I mean Severson lol) or Klingberg.

Once more for the people in the back, THE CANES ARE NOT TRADING MORROW FOR MILLER. They weren't dealing Morrow for Horvat, they're not doing it to take on that anchor of an extension! Miller is garbage defensively and isn't a great skater, he would not fit into the Canes team.

What about if it was Coghlan lol, I do think the term is too long, but do you think there's any chance Waddell goes for that?

You really think common sense and logic will stop Canuck fans from posting JT to Carolina trades?

Unless the Canucks end up eating half of Miller’s new deal, and attaching a first to Miller, I highly doubt Waddell even considers biting. Doesn’t matter if you change Morrow to Coghlan, since the Canes wouldn’t make the deal in the first place.

I know you're exaggerating but I don't think they can even retain on the next contract yet. I could see Waddell go for Miller if he was like 6m especially if they want someone who can chip in at C. He's nearly on pace for 30 goals too, and a goal scorer seems to be something that they want.

He cannot defend, he'd be played on the 4th line because Rod would see him as a liability (which he is). No, there's no chance he does it

If they don't get Meier, you think that they could go for him at 6m? Don't think Vancouver would do that but just curious as to what's the highest cap hit that Waddell would be willing to have a 38 yo take.

Guess his lack of defense + the contract being too long prevents it from being a possibility. Would be like Huberdeau in CGY except CAR would have brought the problem on themselves if they trade for Miller.

The argument that Miller can chip in at C would be null and void for the Canes. Especially since Rod hasn’t played anyone at C who doesn’t play defense. That’s kind of why Necas hasn’t been transitioned to a full time C, since his defensive (and offensive before this year) game needed some work.

If the Canes were to make the mistake of acquiring Miller, it would be as a LW, not a C, and under the conditions that Waddell sets. I also wasn’t exaggerating with that pricing. The contract he has goes against everything the Canes FO has historically done. The Canes haven’t been afraid to not sign guys to long term contracts that turn into anchors into their mid to late 30’s. Trocheck, Niederreiter, and Hamilton are all great examples of that (Niederreiter being the one who doesn’t fit that criteria the best, but still applicable considering he was let go to bring in Patches). The only reason I see teams checking in on Miller is to see how much Vancouver is willing to pay to get out of their mistake, much like how the Canes took on Marleau and ended up with Jarvis. Miller at his full contract carries too much risk for the Canes, and not enough reward. Half retained and a piece to go with balances it out a lot more.

I think, even if he was 4 mil, Waddell would steer clear. He's just not a good system fit. He would be much more of a liability.

Carolina would NEVER trade their top prospect and a first round pick to acquire a guy under a horrible, HORRIBLE contract that hasn’t even started yet and screams at his goalies!

What I meant by chipping in at C was that he just takes some draws and plays C in certain circumstances. I definitely agree that history shows that they wouldn't take him at full cap hit. I also agree that they probably don't take him on at all since the reasons you mentioned.

That being said I disagree on what it would look like if they did decide to go for him. Half retained+a sweetener is unreasonable, Marleau was shipped off because the Leafs couldn't afford him and the Canes only took him on to buy him out, and they got a 1st for that. Miller is still producing and at 6m he's only making slightly more than Burns and he's not 37.

Miller’s contract isn’t that bad…for the next 2-3yrs.

What makes it toxic is the last 4-5yrs, and it’s buyout proof with all the signing bonuses.

At least Larsson can defend. They would sign Klingberg to 7.5M x 7 years lol.

It's $$$$ and term that makes Miller untradable. Unfortunately for Miller, he's going have many years of personal misery being a Canucks all because he signed that contract.

Tell you who might a good fit for Canes next season is ROR, now of the Leafs.

Idk why I said Larsson though, I meant to say Severson lol, maybe it's because I associated the Boeser for Severson rumors to Hall for Larsson.

Makes sense. Severson I feel is the better defender though so Klingberg to play with OEL would be unreal to watch lol.

Yeah, Severson would probably be a better fit for them since they already have a PP QB and they need guys that can defend. I think Severson and Dumba would be players of interest, but I can't shake the feeling that they get Klingberg. I do wonder though if they will buyout OEL in the upcoming off-season or after.

That's a long buy out, but not too ridiculous. I think they would give it another year.
