Following the breadcrumbs on a Meier deal

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2023
Published: Feb. 21, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I have little else to go by...so using the information I got...

Meier Trade
1. Zetterlund -- There have been a few places that have
reported Sharks have interest in Zetterlund. It may have
come original from a Fourth Period Reporter. But take it
with a grain of salt, because only 2-3 days earlier, it was
reported that Sharks hadn't yet made their 'list' of NJD
prospects they like yet.

2. Gritsyuk -- There was some report that a San Jose
scout (Ladykin) had been attending Avangard games
recently. We hear about scouts at NHL games all the
time, but scouts at KHL games seems bit more notable.
It may mean nothing...but who knows.

3. Brennan -- There were some reports a few weeks
ago that SJS were likely to ask for a goalie prospect back
in the deal.

4. 2023 1st round pick -- unprotected

5. 2024 conditional 2nd round pick -- cane become 1st
if NJ makes 2nd round of 2024 playoffs

6. Retention vs Johnsson -- retaining Meier at 50% ($3
million in AAV) would cost SJS about $1 million in real
dollars between deadline and end of season. Taking
Johnsson would cost them about $150,000.

7. Nutivaara -- once SJS moves out Meier, they won't
be accruing LTIR space anymore, so Nutivaara's AAV
would go from LTIR to regular old IR. So it saves SJS
another $300,000. This also balances out the number
of contracts on San Jose's books (would be at 49 out
of 50 max).

8. Quantity vs Quality -- Its both, really. But in reading
as much of Griers comments over last year as I can, he
has talked a few times about expanding their prospect
pool, which lead me believe he may look for more than
just 3 pieces here (good example was the trading of
#11 pick).

That's it. If there is any other news, let me know. My gut still says it will be package around Mukhamadullin and 1st (using Fiala as comp) with additional pieces for rental this year.

---------------

("No Nemec, Holtz, Hughes means No Meier"...
you know that guy is coming...All I can say is, learn
more about what's in the deal, worry less about
what's missing from the deal.)

I think it looks good. I like Zetterlund and I think he could blossom with an expanded roll. Is Brennan a good prospect? His numbers don't scream future NHL goalie right now. I know goalies are such a crap shoot but maybe Schmid or Daws?

Also again very good detail in the description.

I dont in this case Brennan is better than/ or obviously better than the sharks prospects at the moment. I would guess that / hope that the sharks would go after Muk over Gritsyuk, and do their best to get holtz in the deal although the opportunity for two firsts is probably better than holtz

Brennan or Malek probably
Our prospect goalie depth chart probably looks like...

Akira Schmid -- unlikely, as he may take Blackwood spot as early as next year.
Nico Daws -- maybe, but I figured someone off reserves was easier since SJ is near the contract limit.
Jakub Malek -- Probably the better prospect than Brennan right now, but less recognizable name.
Ty Brennan -- (included above). He was last goalie cut from Canadian World Junior team..and was top-ranked goalie from last year's draft (Can't really tell you much more about him
Cole Brady -- Currently, an NCAA back-up at age 22.

Makiniemi looks solid, am guessing he is top option internally. Chrona may become a free agent this summer. Mann, while his personal habits/ethic is inspiring, is still in ECHL at age 24. Gaudreau and Beaupit don't appear to be on track for pro contracts yet. I'd think either Malek or Brennan would help, at least from depth perspective.

Ranking goalie prospects is not really my thing, but taking a stab anyway...

This deal sucks, and you know it. Rule of thumb - if you have to write this much, you know its bs

Makes a lot of sense based on the reports. Would probably guess that Daws or Schmid leaves though.

I agree I'm thinking more like:
Nemec, Holtz, 23 1st Muk, a goalie prospect and rostered player, maybe Sharongovich for
Meier with no retention and no cap dump back to SJ
I mean it's close but I'm still not sure it's enough? Thoughts?

I would be a little higher than Mann, right now he is really too good for the ECHL but gets sent down to make room for Dell. He is currently on a 3-0 run with the Cuda and looks very very solid. Every time he is in the ECHL he is getting weekly awards constantly. I think a goalie prospect is only part of a meier deal if they look like a surefire thing to be an NHL starter.

I know youre trolling my guy up there, but Holtz 1st and muk for meier I think is fair value. minor changes can be maid for retention + moving Johnson if devils desire

Solid Strawman - rule of thumb you quoted applies here as well.

That we don't have...not in our prospect pool, at least.

I think the SJS pool looks a lot better with Chrona included.
Outside of Levi, Parets, Dobes, Commesso...he is probably 5th best NCAA Goalie prospect right now.
Gotta get him signed.

the real rule of thumb is if you cant back up your argument (like yours) with explanation, you're opinion is not worth much.

if there is a goalie prospect involved, it will be daws or schmit.

While I agree in general, I think Gritsyuk and Zetterlund are valuable enough to offset that in this deal. If you wanted to swap Z for Foote, I'd be willing to upgrade the goalie.

hehe, doesnt really matter what you want :P, i dont know what the final trade will look like, but if they are interested in a goalie, its gotta 1 of these 2 is all i'm saying. what the other pieces will be i dont know!

I wouldn't be so sure. Brennan, although objectively worse than Schmid and Daws, was the top rated NA goalie this year. He may be attractive to the Sharks because he's unsigned and therefore easier to throw into the deal, and would be an afterthought for Fitz, easier to give up.

I would imagine San Jose is looking for actually good goalie prospects, Brennan doesn’t add much of anything. And if this is the return for Meier Grier should pack his bags now

Hard for deadline deal.
We have only four signed goalies (our ECHLers are on AHL deals).
If we moved one, we'd need a waiver-exempt goalie in return (in this deal or elsewhere).

(we dressed 8 goalies last year...)

If it was summer move, maybe Daws becomes expendable.
But Schmid would be hard to include.
