Yeah reinbacker isn't getting to 28 but he's a good pick. I'm not paying for karlsson, I just don't think he'll hold up.

He's super iffy in terms of his durability. but if healthy, is an absolute beast.

Barb gets more than that
EK trade is really terrible for SJ, don't think that's close or something Grier would accept if he was asking for Bouchard or Broberg from EDM
I'd try:
1st (possibly 2 if they're late and there's a lot of retention)
2 B prospects or 1 A prospect
decent NHL player but with a big contract to swap with EK to help with cap
2.5-3.5m retention which plays a big role on changing the return

It has to be something that Grier can convince ownership it is worth paying another team to have Karlsson for 4 years, otherwise he stays whether he wants to be here or not.

Grier is going to have to settle. It's unlikely a team is going to pay a big price unless there's some sort of significant retention. Even then, with his injury history, teams aren't willing to risk it. I still think, even after making this trade, that it's terrible for Detroit (I might go back and fix it)
The retention isn't an issue when you're going to be in rebuild the next few seasons. Now isn't the time to be picky.

Highly doubt EK gets you a 1st and two B prospects. his contract is too expensive and he's older and injury prone. Like I said, Grier might have to settle for a 1st and MAYBE an added young roster player. Keeping him out of spite and just being picky is going to be the worst thing SJS management does (if happens)

Your argument is that Grier is suddenly going to dramatically lessen his ask from the TDL and I don't see that happening or that ownership will be on board with it. He's more valuable to SJ than your suggested trade value, regardless if fans chime in saying they don't want to take the risk on glass cannon Karlsson. This return hurts SJ more than it helps, and is unrealistic since management and players want to win and not pull a ACGM full tank fantasy. No owner is going to pay another franchise to have their star player year after year unless they're getting fairly compensated. If there's no retention then a 1st+prospect makes more sense. The retention is what makes it terrible for SJ.

You could probably bump the 4th up a pick or two. Like I said, retention isn't a big deal when you're a rebuilder.

I know SJS fans are hard coping with the EK situation, but he's not getting you the package you think he does. Even in the offseason when teams don't need to be cap compliant, he's not getting you a Meier type package, which is basically where you've valued him. An absolute offensive monster, but he's made of glass and he's making 11.5per for the next 3 seasons. Good luck finding a suitor unless you're retaining at least 3, and even then, the package won't be as big as you think. If you end up keeping him by being picky, congrats, you've ruined your chances at getting ANY return.

Well let me ask, what would EK get if he hit FA after this season? I guarantee it would be around 3-4 years at around 8-10 mil. He's also had one injury that was recurring and that was because he came back to early from it. It hasn't been an issue in nearly two seasons. The rest of his injuries are results of unlucky hockey plays (or debatably dirty). He's also 32 with a contract that expires when he's 36. That's not old.

So mix that with the fact that he's flat out the best and most creative offense producing d-man in the past 20+ years (in fact BETTER production than McDavid even strength) and average defensively, and you've got one of the most valuable assets in the league with a 7.5-9.5 cap hit.

Retention is not a big deal when you're a rebuilder on a ACGM site using fantasy dollars
Convincing your boss to throw away 12-20m to have your star player play on another team, especially when your team is not a large market, is going to be a hard sell.
So for this return he's staying a Shark.

and yes with a high retention amount the return will approach Meier return value.

Holland and Grier couldn't make a deal happen and they gave up a Barrie+1st+4th+Schaefer for Ekholm+6th. So yeah this isn't close to what Grier is going to to be able to accept based on suggestive ancillary information

He's 32 making 11.5m and he's made of glass. that's the entire issue. you're going about your argument as if he's a regular, healthy, 27 year old. he's on the wrong side of 30 and injury prone.

Ekholm's contract was more team friendly than the 11.5 EK is making, not to mention Ekholm isn't made of glass. Big difference.

EDM also needed more defense and less offense, but yet they still went after Karlsson

and Karlsson blows Ekholm's worth out of the water, unless you think Ekholm is a sleeper Norris candidate this year. Karlsson is overpayed but he's worth more than 6m.

Again you have 3 mil retained so his cap hit is NOT 11.5 in that scenario. My argument was very clear his age is 32 and will end at 36. Pretty ideal time for a high end talent's contract to end. And Ekholm who you mentioned elsewhere, has had as many injuries in the two season's prior to this year. EK being made of glass is such a lazy take, he's healthy now, you can't keep parroting that,

You: "I have no idea what an EK trade will look like at this point, so I'm just spit balling. someone help."
Also you: *argues with anyone who is correcting you on something you admitted knowing nothing about*

EK65 could probably net a little bit more than what you have here, but I agree with your argument above.
San Jose missed a pretty amazing window to get rid of a massive contract, they have another chance come draft day but IMO his value drops then (and depending on his next season it may become an unmovable contract again).

Still hope EK and San Jose can find a team to make this work, he deserves a cup, but it sucked waiting for him to get moved all deadline just for him to stay.

Sharks don’t move EK with retention for that, nor do they move Barabanov for that.

Reinbacher won’t be there at 28, maybe Simashev

Yeah, meaning I have no idea where he'll go.
I know where his value lies, and it's not the same return you'll get like Meier.

Just a bit of homerism methinks.

They missed a massive window for when teams were willing to pay a premium for a RHD.

Now, they'll have to settle for a bit less in the offseason when teams aren't jumping to fill spots come playoffs.
I agree i kind of lowballed, but he's not getting you a Meier return anymore.

Seems like my argument set off a few fans though. Oh well, you get what you get on here.

If we don't take a great forward with our first pick I'll be super disappointed but reinbacker just seems like an Yzerman pick. Hopefully the Islanders start losing and that 2nd pick is close to 15 than 25

I think that since Grier said "3 first for 18%" that became the staple and some fans cant get past that statement.
Maybe not my spot to speak but if I'm a San Jose fan my biggest fear is them failing to move EK at all, 4 years down the road when they're rebuilding the picks/prospects he could've netted would change their future 100%.
