Don't think MTL would even offer that at this point and don't think Winnipeg accepts it either.

It's a weird game of chess right now and will be determined by PLDs next contract

I would not give up a first round pick in a trade unless it’s for one of the elite players in the league and even then we are rebuilding. There is no reason whatsoever to trade for a player we do not need who will cost too much.

I wouldnt if i was the habs. Anderson has been playing his best hockey since we traded for him this last stretch, there's no reason to give up a first period at this point, plus there's a good chance we will be drafting another center this year that could very well slot into the top 6 in the near future

Gorton and Hughes are smart.

Anderson has been alright, but I don't think he'll ever live up to that contract, same for Gallagher unfortunately, the term makes them worse.

PLD can be had for free in the summer of 2024, drafting a young center this year, and getting him for free makes more sense.

No reason for the Habs to make any moves.

When Gallagher signed that deal it was a guarantee he wasnt going to live up to it, unfortunately it was a deal for services rendered. At least Gallagher is the type of player you want around your young prospects, hopefully his effort and drive can rub off on a few of them. But again thats not worth even half his contract, and hard to justify giving him the ice time he would need to produce at his previous 30-goal clips

Giving a smaller guy a contract that goes into his mid-thirties, the way he plays, he was never going to live up to it. Not sure he is that great of a locker room guy either, him being passed for the C given the 5 years of contract left was a little questionable to his role with the team.

I think now with MSL, they are better off with Gallagher on LTIRetired and let MSL encourage those kids.

WPG declines as they could get more for PLD as a pure rental at the deadline in my opinion.

Even taking out Dubois there isn't enough there for Winnipeg to take on Anderson's contract.

To be fair a lot Gallagher's biggest injury issues weren't completely related to his style of play but bad luck.

Getting hit with pucks is predictable for a net front player of course, but getting hit in unprotected areas is never expected.
The multiple hand injuries, foot, and elbow, were just coincidental. It didn't help that you had Subban and then Weber firing most of those pucks.

You'd expect him to have leg, back, neck, head, injuries with his style of play. He took a lot of abuse in the form of crosschecks, slashes, elbows and fists, but avoided serious injury for the most part.
He did get a broken jaw from one crosscheck from Niskanen but that wasn't on him.

The real issue is his hip. He tore it in the qualifying round in the shortened season and it hasn't been rehabilitating well. He was playing through it, not a good idea in retrospect, until his jaw was broken.
He managed okay the following season until he took yet another shot (off his thumb this time), but normally with a hip injury your days are numbered. He probably came back too early from the thumb and reinjured the hip in the cup run.

I don't buy the narrative that his decline was inevitable. It's more of a cautionary tale that if you are going to hand out a contract like that, you should do a better job of protecting the player so they last the duration, even if it's from themselves.
If they want to play through some bumps, bruises, and cuts, that's one thing. If it's a foot, knee, hip, back, neck, head injury, don't risk it.

It's interesting because PLD's agent has hinted his client would like to play for the habs one day. That doesn't mean that is the only place he would like to go, if this was the most Montreal would offer the jets would either.

A: let PLD accept his qualifying offer of 6M and go all in next season.
B: go through arbitration and still get him at less then market value and do the same

Or the most likely C trade him to a team that thinks they can win the cup next season and will offer the jets more.

Point is if Montreal really wants the player they'll pay up this summer and sign him rather then have to bid against 30 other teams. A handful of which could offer the same money with less taxes and others that are closer to winning a cup.

Having a 35 year old play that style consistently was never realizable, he hasn't adapted his game, age comes for us all.

Standing in front of the net is one thing, the best players in the league do it, but they move as the puck is coming, the purpose is to screen the goalie, not block the shot. frown

To that point, do you think the Jets will be in a position to be sellers at the deadline next season?
