Description
It's my first try but I figured I'd put it out there to learn and get feed back. My main goal was to get a younger team and fix up the bottom 6 a bit.

So Buffalo pays a very high a price to get 2 exceptionally old players? Where is the incentive to actually do this?

Welcome to CapFriendly! Sometimes, it's not too friendly.

The chances of our trading the guy presumed to be our starting goalie for at least the next three seasons are small, but IF we do, it will almost certainly be for future assets, not someone whose contract expires before we'll be returning to relevance.

A backup goalie of no particular distinction like Casey DeSmith isn't going to get you a second-round draft pick, especially from a team for whom that pick is the only selection they have in the first three rounds. And in this draft, too.

I appreciate that feedback. It definitely makes sense with Gibson, part of me was thinking that he might push for it as well, being from PGH and because he has said he wouldn't object to it. I also figured even though Guentzel is old, you do have an incredibly young team and he brings some good experience, especially as an older guy that won two cups at a very young age. I was definitely too optimistic.

With DeSmith I was definitely thinking that they're currently close to being contenders now that they could be okay not having the pick, but you're right and he is a back up goalie and not a good one at that. If there were to be a trade between PIT and NJD that involved DeSmith, what do you think it could look like?

If New Jersey decides to move Blackwood, then they might be interested in giving you a fourth or fifth for DeSmith.

By the way (I just noticed), I think you're a little high on Zucker's new (and presumably last) contract.

Zucker will NOT get that. WOW. He's been good this year but his last few years have been not so great. Hurt a lot. He may get 5MM per for 4yrs. That might be an overpay.

Also, Gibson and Jarry? Seems like a lot of goaltending. Not sure it's necessary.

And you have 6MM free (3MM with 23 man roster). You can do something with that. Friedman is a 6/7 so I'm guessing you don't have depth. Use the 3MM to sign some.

Schmid is looking pretty good for us

If we trade Guentzel we should be getting picks/younger players in return, not Gibson. This team I don't think is that much of an improvement. Our top 6 is worse and that's a huge overpay on Zucker. I don't think Wood is a top 6 player full time either. And the bottom 6 is pretty weak as well. Poehling I don't think is a 3rd line center and the rest is all the AHL guys who while they've been decent haven't been producing at all.

Take this as constructive criticism since it's your first try haha.

BIG overpay on Zucker. Also, no reason to make that ANA trade. Gibson isn't what he was like 5-6 years ago - so giving up your best winger for him and that contract is just a bad move. Also, if hypothetically you did get Gibson, you wouldn't also sign Jarry. That's too much cap space to the goalies. Just pick one. In this specific scenario I think the choice is obviously Jarry. He's better, cheaper, and you don't have to get rid of anything to get him.
