5 reasons why Alex DeBrincat is poised to earn roughly 9 million per year

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 4, 2023
Published: Apr. 4, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1 ---- He has a Qualifying Offer of 9 million.

>>> If he doesn't receive his qualifying offer and DeBrincat is not signed beforehand, he becomes a UFA this summer.

>>> Ottawa has until July 3rd to submit his qualifying offer with July 3rd being the first Monday after the 2023 NHL draft.

>>> If he is signed to his qualifying offer of 9 million, he will become a UFA in the summer of next year for having 7 accrued seasons as an NHL player.

2. He is a right shot LW capable of scoring 40 goals a season.

>>> There aren't many of those in today's NHL.

>>> He has scored 26 this season playing with Shane Pinto as opposed to someone more electric offensively like Tim Stutzle.

>>> His head coach is someone who doesn't allow him to "play to his strengths".

3. The case of Filip Forsberg

>>> Filip Forsberg is another right shot LW capable of scoring 40 goals.

>>> He has only scored 19 this season so far.

>>> Last year, Forsberg threatened to leave as a UFA unless the Nashville Predators paid up.

>>> He eventually signed an 8 year extension at 8.5 million per with Nashville.

>>> A player on the Ottawa Senators making 9 million is taxed more than a million more than a player on the Nashville Predators making 8.5 million.

>>> Using that metric alone, signing DeBrincat to 9 million per year becomes an even greater possibility.

4. The case of Cole Caufield

>>> Both Caufield and DeBrincat are 5 foot 7 Americans in their early 20s , shoot right, play LW, can easily score 25 goals a season and will play on your 1st powerplay unit.

>>> Both Caufield and DeBrincat will become RFAs this summer.

>>> Using metrics like point production and ice time, DeBrincat has shown to be the better player this season compared to Caufield.

>>> If Montreal ends up signing Caufield to ~8 million per year and DeBrincat is still not yet signed by Ottawa, then an extension at ~9 million per year for DeBrincat becomes more likely.

5. We have invested so much already in Alex DeBrincat.

>>> We spent the #7 and #39 overall picks in the 2022 NHL draft as well as a 3rd round pick to acquire DeBrincat in the first place.

>>> If we trade DeBrincat to another team, we will end up getting "pennies on the dollar".

>>> An investment is a lot better than a sunk cost.

>>> That is why the Ottawa Senators would be better served if DeBrincat is signed long-term as an investment than if DeBrincat was traded away as a sunk cost.

>>> If he ends up being signed to roughly 9 million per year, then it is what it is.

Look man, you guys keep doing this and it's honestly the thought-process of a child. The Pens aren't trading for Joseph because he's POJ's brother. You guys are stuck wit him. He's got a bad contract and nobody else wants it.

I don't think where Joseph goes matters as much as just moving his salary so if pens fans are criticizing that, move on. I'm hoping they can get Debrincat long term for a discount given he won't hit 40 this year (might not hit 30). Like if they could get him for like a shade under 8 million that would be amazing. I don't think they'll pay him more than Stutzle. I'm also not banking on having that 1st in 2023. Anyway, nice team!

This has become about the pens now. Hextall will be fired (please), but I can see your reasoning based on hexy unthinkable roster destruction. But pens cannot afford that.

Otherwise agree that debrincat is entitled to his 9M for your reasons.. maybe he agrees in the 8 range to fit in with the other building blocks.

Ok, explain to me exactly how he would help this bottom six more than people we currently have.

You literally gave no actual hockey reason. Please tell me what he brings in his HOCKEY play that would help the Pens and makes him worth $3M a year.

This is the thing. He's now a cap dump. Mathieu Joseph is overpaid by about $1.5M. He's a defensive forward who plays a slight physical game with no real offensive upside. He's basically Zach-Aston Reese and at 26 years old, he pretty much is what he is now.

1. He's a strong skater with a burst of speed.

2. He will kill penalties on your first unit.

3. He can play on any line except the first one.

4. He's only 26 years old and has a long career ahead of him.

5. He will battle for loose pucks in the corner.

6. When he first came to Ottawa, he scored a point per game.

7. Please tell me what Mikael Granlund has brought that is helping the Pens and that makes him worth $5M a year.

I believe Sanderson will sign for about 5 million per.

It's manageable.

1) What does Granlund have anything to do with this? Answer: Nothing, so this is completely irrelevant.

2) Only 26? At 26 he is what he is. He's only hit 20 points ONCE in his career.

3) He scored a point per game? IT WAS FOR 11 GAMES! That was also two years ago! What a ridiculous thing.

4) Our PK is fine

5) He can't play on every line. He's not good enough.

6) He's Zach-Aston Reese 2.0. Good defensive forward with little to no offensive-upside.

He's not worth $3M and you know it. That's why every Sens AGM is moving him.

Pens already made that mistake with Brock McGinn and dumped him. Don't need Joseph. Poehling and Drew O'Connor do all the same roles with great defensive impacts and make a combined cap hit of a million less. It's bad cap structure.
Oh, and nobody likes Granlund. He's another massive mistake by that idiot Hextall. Adding another overpaid bottom 6 forward doesn't fix that mistake.

You have Poehling and O'Connor who do the same thing Joseph does for a combined cap hit that is less. Don't trade for McGinn 2.0 when you don't have to. They need cap space to address the 3rd line with legit 3rd liners.

What does Granlund have anything to do with this?

1. He has a cap hit of 5 million while Joseph has a a cap hit of 3 million.

2. Your GM is Ron Hextall and he just traded for Granlund.

3. Since the trade, Granlund has contributed less on a stronger team than Joseph has for a weaker team.

4. Ottawa is only getting a 4th round pick here while Pittsburgh paid a 2nd round pick in a deep draft for Granlund.

5. You can't defend the Granlund trade while attacking this trade for Joseph without coming across as a hypocrite.

6. If Ron Hextall doesn't want to spend a 4th on Joseph for some reason, we'll just get it done somewhere else.

You sound really angry over something that is not even the main topic of this ACGM and has no consequence over your life.

Get over it.

Didn't much care for the DeBrincat trade at the time for exactly this reason. If he was signed long term at a better number, then great. He's a valuable player. But he's not a guy I make the highest paid player on the team and feel super good about it.

I could very well be wrong about this one. Maybe he gets that money and is worth it, but I would have kept the picks and looked for different complimentary pieces. Just as an example, Ottawa could have waited two weeks and got Bjorkstrand for pretty much nothing. Obviously that's being captain hindsight, but the point is that there were other moves out there.

Your Granlund argument makes zero sense to the scenario. Every team has a bad trade and bad contract, so you can use this argument for any team. Get over it. You have no clue what you're talking and no leg to stand on. Joseph is a bad contract you want to get rid of and you have no real way of justifying it.

Granlund. Carter. Kapanen. Marino.

Like it or not, Hextall has a history of s***ty trades. Now that his job might be on the line, he’ll probably make more panic moves like Granlund.

6. He has already taken his bargain deal and holds a lot of cards now in negotiations. Unlike any of the other big contracts on the Sens DeBrincat has already proven he can be a 40 goal ppg player going into this negotiation. You are no longer gambling on potential but paying for a proven asset.

7. The case of Matt Barzal. Barzal recently signed for just over 9M in the last year of his contract where he too had a 9M QO. Though the players are quite different in terms of style their overall effects on any given game are not too dar off

Reasons why DeBrincat should not earn 9 million per year.
Since March 1 Ottawa has been in a push for a wild card spot. 17 games ; 6 goals ; 4 assists ; -11 ( but one helluva scrap ) , just not elite production.
Stutzle and Tkachuk are the center pieces of this team ( add Sanderson soon ) .
The only reason he will get 9 million is because that is his QA and Dorion won’t loose him for nothing. He may be a 9 million player to another team but IMO I don’t think his value is more than 7.5
Dorion rolled the dice and this one did not work out as well as he thought , but it was great to build fan excitement in the off season.
His biggest gaff was Gustavsson for Talbot , man that one stings. These 2 moves may cost him his job when new ownership starts looking at his resume.

don’t see a world where debrincat signs for below 8mil. if those are the offers he’s getting he takes the QO and gets to UFA status where he’ll get bare minimum 8.5mil from someone.

My Granlund argument makes a lot of sense.

If a GM like Ron Hextall makes one bad trade, then there's some chance he'll make more bad trades.

Except this trade for Joseph isn't bad.

I'm getting rid of Joseph here because he's a cap casualty, not because he has a bad contract.

There's a difference.

I honestly could care less which team pays a 4th round pick to take Joseph.

Ron Hextall is Pittsburgh's GM, not you.

If he could spend a 2nd round pick on a $5 million player like Granlund, he could spend a 4th round pick on a $3 million player like Joseph.

Once you're ready to whine and complain about something more important like the main topic of this ACGM, let me know.

Have a nice day.
