shut up and rebuild

Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 14, 2023
Published: Apr. 14, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
not trying to start arguments, but why does every acgm Montreal team (at least that I see) try and make a win now roster? Everyone is trying to trade for Dubois like he won't just not sign with Winnipeg anyways, and even if he does agree to a qualifying offer for one year, just let him stay that year and leave as a UFA. Also, wouldn't you want to milk this rebuild by drafting more prospects that can either develop into future Montreal players or just to be valuable trade assets? All I'm saying is that pushing the contention window from next year and into 2025-2026ish instead could aid in making this team less of a one year wonder and could potentially make the Canadiens a Tampa level dynasty. Montreal fans, give me your side of the story, is it because of the 2021 cup run that you think this team can contend now? or is this leafs level of delusion setting in because you're anxious to hear Caufields extension? Whatever it is, lets hope it pays off.

Additional notes related to moves below:
I'm not the most well acquainted with the values/strengths/chemistry of the team considering I'm a leafs fan, so understand that it's not because I'm a complete idiot, but because I'm only mostly an idiot.
Also, regarding the moves themselves, I don't have Primeau in the lineup as I think a veteran like Reimer would aid Montembeault in his development, but he could take the backup roll over by the end of the season. I also Drafted Will Smith with the 5th overall pick because tankathon projects it and because long term I think slaf and smith could be a very entertaining duo. Finally, both Dvorak and all the players I placed on IR are guys I wanted to move but couldn't figure out how so they're kinda just there now.

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Unless Ottawa is looking to get Bernard-Docker in full time, this will probably go through. Edmundson is lucky to get a 1st retained or not so don't complain
OTT
  1. Edmundson, Joel ($1,750,000 retained)
  2. 2023 4th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Ottawa needs a right D to replace Hamonic/Holden, and Edmundson retained is a bit cheaper than most other potential replacements
2.
MTL
  1. 2023 5th round pick (NYR)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
The 3rd comes from retaining, the 5th because Jake Allen's value is not high
WPG
  1. Allen, Jake ($1,850,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Backup goalie to replace Rittich
3.
MTL
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (SEA)
  2. 2023 4th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Seattle and Ron Francis are incredibly reserved when it comes to any trade, so in a case like this, you dump more cap and give more ice time to your growing defense while also gaining more draft stock in the process
SEA
  1. Savard, David
Additional Details:
Seattle could look to fortify their middle/bottom pairings on D with guys who can block shots, as it relieves the work load placed on their realistically pretty weak goalies. I thought about adding Allen to the trade but in all honesty with Driedger making his return by next season and Gru being
untouchable for the wrong reasons, I decided it wouldn't make sense.
4.
MTL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Adding a 1st and only losing a guy who didn't cost you much to get in the first place and a 3rd is a great deal, and having him throughout the season might help provide guys like Slaf and whoever is drafted with this year's 1st in their development.
CBJ
  1. Monahan, Sean
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Deadline Move, as long as Columbus doesn't get messed up with injuries and their young guys actually step up, they don't look like an awful team, and have potential to do a similar but ultimately slightly worse version of what the devils did and jump from bottom 4 in the league to at least in a wildcard race. Adding a Center would be the Jackets stepping up and committing to the wildcard race in hopes of becoming relevant in a positive way.

Why wouldn’t the jackets just sign monahan? Can’t see them giving up next years first even if they are somehow in the playoff race. Especially not for a guy they could sign for free and is injury prone on top of that

That is some ridiculously wishful thinking on the Monahan return. His contract is also done so he's just gonna decide where he wants to play rather than putting his future in the Habs' hands if they have no intention of keeping him long term.

Agree with all your points, wait for PLD, don't try to compete just for the sake of it over properly rebuilding.

I would wait another 3-4 seasons just to see this team become the next great dynasty team, and thankfully unlike most people who make Habs AGM's Kent Hughes seems to think the same way.

There are a couple reasons he may choose to sign with Montreal.
1. From Hughes: We won't say we aren't going to make the playoffs next year.
We obviously aren't going to go all in, but making it in isn't out of the realm of possibility. If we do, a healthy Monahan could be part of that.
2. Montreal has a 2C role to offer. Other teams do as well of course, but he was already recovering his value with his performance here and that might be a reason for him to sign his "prove it" contract in a place he has been having some success.
3. Monahan can still get paid here on a 1 year deal. We have the money and the cap space. $5M wouldn't be out of the question but the opportunity to go to a contender with retention @ $2.5M means he gets his cake and can eat it too.

Now I'm not saying Columbus does this or his trade value will be high. I'm only giving plausible reasons he may choose to sign with Montreal rather than go directly to a contender on what will likely be a cheap contract.
His health and performance next season will determine his future and value.

As to the ACGM itself:

Edmundson is not a RHD and his performance and injury this year have decreased his value. Not expecting a 1st unless he turns it around next season in a big way.

Savard will not be moved for a couple middling picks. He's more useful to partner with developing LHD than a mediocre return in a trade. He should net a 1st if we even consider moving him.

If we move Allen, it will be to make room for Primeau (waivers eligible next season). Taking back a contract would be preferable to retention and may change the return, simply to avoid wasting a retention slot.

To answer your question "why does every acgm Montreal team (at least that I see) try and make a win now roster?". It really is two fold.

1. As stated above by Ricocetii, Hughes has stated that Montreal's goal next year is to be competitive and possible make the playoffs. He won't push all in but making good moves that help the long term future like trading for PLD is a possibility.

2. Some fans are as impatient as Leafs fans (after all some of us converted to the Habs lol). In all seriousness though, I think it's more about getting younger and better more than making a contender right away. Most moves I have done and seen are for 20-28 year old players ( for me those include guys like PLD, Dumba, Lafreniere, Grans and Spence) guys who are good now but will get better as the team progresses in the next 2 years.

lmao do you really think that Ottawa is going to give up a 1st for a 3rd pairing defenceman
