Too much for Anderson. Many better replaceable free agent options

I dont think we're gonna retain on Anderson for 4 more years but if we do the return is gonna be bigger than that imo

For point of reference, Montreal doesn't want to trade Anderson and have reportedly turned down substantial offers. They aren't going to move him for that package even with no retention.

Like I said in the description: "Pens have options here, yinz are going to say "no way team X does this.." these are all reasonable, if not overpayments on trades/signings. This team can be competitive and win a few playoff series."

This is just an example and showing that the Pens have options, and yes there are some options available via UFA. Killorn, Engvall, Fast, Bunting, Barbashev, Bertuzzi.

I was just proving a point that there is a way for the Pens to put together a competitive team that on paper, should be able to compete within their division better than recent years.

Fair offer. Don’t see Bs moving Sway tho. Ullmark more likely moved of the 2.

You think? Moving the guy whos 66-16 over the last 2 years? Seems kind of bonkers to me.

Also totally forgot about Ty Smith, I'd probably play him on the 3rd line over Friedman.

Boston has 2 #1 goalies. Keep the younger long term asset, move the older one with 2 years left while his value is at it’s peak.

    If they move a goalie.

If Sway takes a bridge deal to keep the tandem together…they don’t move either.

Killorn, Bunting and Bertuzzi will be relatively expensive (even if you're overpaying Domi, Zucker and Tatar). The Anderson trade just seems like a clear outlier, as does the Swayman contract (which is way too low).

That's probably the smart way to go, keep 'em both or move Ullmark while value at his highest, but I feel like I've seen it happen too often that teams trade the younger/unproven guy over the "vet."

Which 25 goal scoring FA is gonna sign for less than 5.5 million?

Is it though? He's coming off an ELC deal and likely going to get a bridge deal to 27 before he gets his big payday. Maybe he gets 4.5m per as the bridge deal, but I can't see it being much higher.

Offer sheet or not, you don’t think Swagman has enough respect to go to Boston and give them the opportunity to match any offer he gets.

Goalies with his upside generally range in the 4ish to 6ish mil range on walk to UFA contracts. If he was wiling to sign for 3.5x3, then Boston probably wouldn't trade him for a 1st and a 2nd.

I get the options thing, but the premise of this seems to hinge on Pittsburgh getting Swayman cheaply so that they can spend to improve forward depth and using him to cover up for a shallow D core. And at that price, there's frankly going to be more competition for him. The goalie is what the Penguins can't cheap out on.

He has ONE career 25 goal season. And in that 25 goal season, 126 players SCORED MORE than him. And guess what, the top 125 skaters who outscored him dont all makes 5.5 mil. And this deal expires when he is 33, about 3 years after a players typical prime years

If a team trades assets for his RFA rights, he can't go to Boston and say "match this" lol that ain't how it works buddy.

They can also go Freddy Andersnon, Raanta, Adin Hill, etc. for a similar price point, maybe not Hill at that price point but I can't see Anderson and Raanta coming in too much more. Swayman was just one option. I actually disagree in that they can't go "cheap" on it. If they make calculated decisions, they can go cheap on it. Moving on from an oft-injured Jarry, for someone who has some durability, while bolstering the bottom of the roster is exactly the route they should go when the UFA goalie class isn't that great. Then keep tabs on the trade market in-season, as teams fall in the standings and try to pluck someone to replace CDS.

I know you say don't go cheap on goalies, but there aren't really a ton of options right now. Gibson isn't what he used to be, Jarry is often injured. Martin Jones sucks. Johnny Quick is old. The smarter play would be to bolster your bottom 6 (which was their biggest issue this year, they dropped to 16th in goal scoring, and defensively were far worse than prior years).

That didnt answer my question, who in the 2023 free agent class can you sign for under 5.5 million that has scored at a 25 goal pace in 2022/2023?
