Retool

Created by: Hockeyfan1234
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 25, 2023
Published: Apr. 25, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
They won’t make Carter the healthy scratch but they should give him the basketball treatment and give him games off as “maintenance days” and have Benson in for him. The times the pens have back to backs or 3 in 4, Carter should be the healthy scratch in at least 1 of those games.

Just throwing things at the wall hoping they stick.

Line 1: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
Line 2: Nylander played his best on that second line in limited action. I prefer him to be there with 2 vets as opposed to a very young 3rd line.
Line 3: Poehling is one of the fastest skaters in the league. They need to surround him with faster skaters and let him fly. Not put him with guys like Carter.
Line 4: trying to put sprinkles on poo and hope it works. But I see Carter holding the young guys back.
D pair 1: MP is like a young Dumo and gives Letang a defensive defenseman that can move the puck.
D pair 2: Graves is a big nasty defenseman and Severson is younger than Petry and a solid puck moving offensive defenseman.
D pair 3: Rutta is a solid 3rd pair and will be a good vet to mentor Smith who looked solid last year.

Goalie 1: Vezina caliber goalie. Need to take advantage of Boston’s rough cap situation. I think they should be happy with a young, cheap 2nd pair D and a 3rd round pick. Allows them to trade one of Gryz or Reilly and use that cap to get a cheaper backup/1B in free agency.
Goalie 2: A guy who can start in a pinch if needed and probably more trustworthy to take some load off Ullmark than DeSmith.

I’m sure all the other teams will decline lol.

Think the sabres would probably be better off just giving severson a mil more than you gave him than take petry

What if Severson doesn’t want to go to Buffalo?

I think he is. After two good seasons in WBS, it’s time to sink or swim imo. Honestly wouldn’t mind putting Nylander on the 3rd line after thinking about it since Nylander and Puustinen have had success on the same line in WBS

That's fine, but it forces the pens to pay him more when they shouldn't.

There's more value for the Sabres in putting the Pens in precarious situation (not taking petry, forcing them to pay more for severson) than trading for Petry.

Not really. Many players take less to go where they’d prefer over slightly more for places they don’t.

It’s not a matter of when it’s a matter of how’s it gonna pan out? Puustinen is going to make the roster this coming season as long with Nylander I would assume. Poulin, possibly? Maybe DOC goes down as a healthy scratch? To me DOC hasn’t proved himself enough to solidify that spot on 3/4 LW. I think it’s time we give our other guys a crack at it. Also, I’d expect Hallander see more ice time this year as well.

If the Sabres offer him 7 mil a year, he's not going to take 2 mil less per year because he loves the city of pittsburgh. He's gunna force the pens hand. They may not have to pay 7 mil, but it will definitely be more than 5 years and 5 mil.

Also no offense but the rest of your trades are head scratchers . Why are the bruins trading a vezina goalie for some 3rd pair D and 3rd rounder? Trading Vejmelka for granlund is also really bad. I mean, six other teams that need goalies will offer way better than a buyout candidate.

yeah we havent really been a team to have young guys playing bigger minutes because of always being a "contender" and neededing to have vets in the linuep maybe with a new management we can see younger guys play bigger roles, like poeling this year i find he really impressed and coule have a solid year next year and play a full szn

Again no it doesn’t. If he doesn’t want to play for Buffalo then it doesn’t. If no one else offers more than the pens other than Buffalo…otherwise he can just retire I guess. The good teams are all cap strapped except for Pittsburgh.

Boston isn’t. They are trading a vezina caliber goalie for a young, cheap 2nd pair D and a 3rd rounder. The fact of the matter is the bruins are cap strapped and will have to trade one of their goalies. No one is going to pay top dollar. Just like no one paid top dollar to Vegas for MAF. I already explained the trade.
The AZ trade isn’t Granlund for Vejmelka lol. That’s just disingenuous.

Yea no doubt Poehling is gonna take on a bigger role next year, though it’s inevitable at this point that some of these prospects get their shot. I mean at this point how much longer can they hold the leash on Poulin? That part of me is what makes me think he’s going to start on the roster next year. I’ve made several acgms with it but maybe there’s a possibility of a kid line of Puustinen-Poulin-Nylander next year?

The only thing that may hold him back is that he took time off this year for his mental health. But I think he should definitely be a 1st call up if he doesn’t start the season with the big club.

Yea but I don’t think that really has had any sort of effect on his overall development up to this point in time. Even if that hadn’t have occurred, I still would think the same and say he’d be on the roster next year. It’s a 50/50 honestly but more than likely I’d think that he plays for a bit down in WBS and they let him heat up and then he gets in the roster mid-season?

lmao it happens all the time. Teams constantly use the highest offer they get to leverage more from where they want to go. All the big name free agents did it, actually used buffalo many times over the years since pegula took over. Also, what would lead you to believe he really wants to play in Pittsburgh? non playoff cap strapped team headed towards a rebuild? Sabres could do nothing next year and be a much better team lol

Boston is cap strapped so instead of trading guys they can live without (their backup for example) they are going to trade their vezina goalie? Even for a 2nd pair d-man and third rounder, thats hilariously bad lol.

Thats not at all disingenuous. what is disingenuous is thinking filip hallander is some valuable asset that would entice arizona to give up its starting goalie and just for fun, take on granlund's contract.lmao

It’s a very reasonable trade. Goalies just don’t hold as much value and teams know Boston is cap strapped. This fixes that. Boston has 4 LHD making 3+ million. They have only what? 10 million in cap space. The other option is teams make an offer on Swayman that Boston can’t afford and Boston gets less for one of their goalies 🤷‍♂️

You didn't know? the NHL is a charity for pittsburgh. These are all definitely fair deals and everyone definitely wants to play for their non-playoff, quintessentially mid, npc filled team.

ou that would honesly be fun to watch

jake sid rusy/racks (i can see one of them being traded)
poehling malkin grands
puustinen-poulin-nylander
sheary carts arch

something like this could be reallly fun to see and a more realistic idea because lets be honest carter and grandlund are not going anywhere. or if we trade jake resign zuck and play him back with malkin and move up poehling. the door is pretty side open for next season and whoever takes over can really approach next year a couple different ways

Nah only ones of those that would make it on the market would be Guentz and mayyyyyybe Rust

As for the lines it’s very unpredictable atm so that’s basically up to the GM. A lot could happen with the team then what we think. But it can’t get worse then Hextall did so…

Except the only playoff contender with cap space that needs a top 4RHD is Pittsburgh. So hey if he wants to go waste his time in Arizona…good for him. But if he wants to have a chance to win a cup next year, then go with the playoff contender that will pay the highest. The penguins aren’t cap strapped. But again disingenuous. The Sabres were a worse team this year. So your idea that the Sabres could do nothing and be a better team is just delusional homerism lol.

Swayman is the young up and comer. Again if they’d rather trade Swayman instead. That works. I’d assume they’d want the younger and likely cheaper guy. Again no it’s not. How much did Fleury go for after his Vezina year? Goalies just don’t hold as much value.

It’s very disingenuous. And what does Hallander have to do with anything? Even if he did, it’s still disingenuous because there is more than 2 assets going to Arizona. FYI it’s Granlund who they can put in their top 6 and would likely succeed more in that role, Lindberg who is a solid goalie prospect, a 3rd round pick, and a 7th round pick.

Lol, no.

It will take a really good prospect and a 2nd or a 1st and a mid prospect at minimum to get Linus. And that’s providing he is willing as his NTC is problematic.

LD is of no use to Boston either.

Do you actually believe for a second that pittsburgh is more likely to make the playoffs next year than the Sabres? How many ppl outside of pittsburgh would share that view? The Sabres have 10x the prospect pool the pens do, and all their best players are under the age of 23. So yes, they could do nothing and still be in a better spot than PIT who by the way, had the same amount of points the Sabres did lmao.

lmaooo i actually overestimated your trade offer. LINDBERG? Sub 900 AHL goalie who is 24? lol, even ARZ isnt that dumb...probably.

Absolutely, the pens are way better than the Sabres lol.

Lol he played on a terrible AHL team. News flash: Vejmelka is a sub .900 nhl goalie lol. But not surprising you’re being disingenuous 🤷‍♂️. You can try to flip it anyway you want, but you’re just being silly.

they literally had the same amount of points, idk what possible rationale could lead you to think that the pens are way better than the sabres. That is peak homerism

Edit: actually, its a homer take to think they are better. but way better? thats just NPC status lmao
