Building A Team That Can Regularly Compete With Tampa

Created by: la_scaloneta
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 3, 2023
Published: May 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What TOR should be aiming for in the long run is building a team that can beat teams using any strategy.

In the d-zone they are capable of both defending by forcing the opposition to take point shots, weak side shots & man on man marking.

A team that can exit the zone both through chipping it out & making clean breakout passes.

A team that can gain the offensive zone through dump & chase and by gaining clean entries.

A team that can deal forecheck both aggressively and conservatively.

The reality is Tampa ran circles around us because their players are capable of playing in any of the strategies, and Florida is doing the same to us now.

    Wow wow wow wow.

Yeah, this trade is awful in value. But let's slow it right down inducting Laf into the HoF already, yeah?

This team has players who can control the puck & win puck battles. This playoffs, TOR is getting killed in by opponents in the neutral zone.

Lafreniere is a reclaim project for my team. He will spend 6 months in the AHL working with a skating coach on how to change his direction quicker. After that he will be ready for the big league.

This team is significantly worse and would get killed even worse in every zone, especially the neutral zone

I disagree, they can control the puck much better. Meanwhile TOR’s current team, half the team cannot handle the puck when needed.

It is unlikely there will be a lot of teams who want him. They wouldnt know what to do with him.

yeah, notoriously terrible neutral zone and transition players like gavrikov, Domi and Schenn getting dumb contracts while moving out significantly better defensive and 2 way players is totally "better"
lol at 3 mill for schenn and 4x5 for domi. Just horrific

If you read the description of the trade you'd see he said to replace tarasenko and Kane...

Domi is one of the best transition players and Gavrikov was excellent in that category in 2020-21, what are you talking about? Schenn may not be a good puck carrier but he has good touch and makes the right decision more times than not, unlike the rest of TOR' skaters.

domi is garbage because he doesnt generate anything and gavrikov having one good year in his career 2 seasons ago doesnt mean jack. and schenn is, despite 6 good games this playoffs, a 7th defender and paying him more than a mllion, let alone 3 times for muliple years, that is hilarious.

I disagree with your analysis on Domi, he put up a lot of points this year, is good on the forecheck and has great puck control. He may not perform to his maximum abilities on CBJ but in Toronto's "puck possession system," he would be a good fit.

If we can get Schenn at 1 million, sign me up! But his play in the postseason is worthy of the contract, and he has been playing tough minutes.
