Projecting a 2023-24 Boston Bruins Squad Version One

Created by: OSv38
Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2023
Published: May 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
After the team's shocking devastation in round one of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Florida Panthers, in which they lead the series three games to one as the NHL's winningest team in the league's history, the Boston Bruins will be faced with an incredibly complex and difficult cap situation that will leave the team notably weaker than last season. Still, with competent asset management and deals with legitimate tactical philosophy foundationally set, the Bruins should be able to employ and deploy a highly competitive lineup churning successes similar to that of the Bruins since 2007.

NOTE: This is version one of a prototypical solution for the Boston Bruins' offseason entering the 2023-24 regular season.

Trades
1.
BOS
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (LAK)
BUF
  1. Reilly, Mike
Additional Details:
Despite any effectiveness Mike Reilly may bear in Boston's lineup (especially in a scenario in which Derek Forbort exists by trade), the overages and further cap constraints the Bruins are inflicted with likely force Mike Reilly out of Boston. With the largest projected cap space in the league entering an offseason that may conclude the team's arduous, exhausting rebuild, the Buffalo Sabres taking on a contract such as Mike Reilly's could certainly provide key defensive stability with a strong two-way defender with excellent puck-moving abilities and agility enabling his strong zone entry defense. Reilly also possess an element of versatility, having a role in the top four but also benefiting from weaker competition on the third pair. Boston acquired Reilly back in 2021 for a 2022 third round pick; ultimately, his value has not significantly increased and thus, Buffalo will not likely shed more than what Boston had for Reilly.
2.
BOS
  1. McBain, Jack [RFA Rights]
ARI
  1. 2025 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
In this three way deal, Boston first sends all of their assets to Arizona in a proxy deal, receiving RFA Jack McBain in return. The theme of the Coyotes serving as a proxy in three-way deals such as these continues as their rebuild progresses and accelerates, while receiving yet another first round pick. Arizona and Boston will retain 50 percent to appease the third team in the trade, New Jersey and allowing them to collect a solid middle six forward at a price much more true to his performance value. For the Bruins, Jack McBain provides some developmental opportunity in the AHL, after a wildly inconsistent rookie season in which he played all 82 games for the Arizona Coyotes.
3.
BOS
  1. Sharangovich, Yegor [RFA Rights]
  2. 2024 5th round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
New Jersey will receive Charlie Coyle and a 2024 4th round pick (BOS) from Arizona at 50 percent of his previous contract in this three way deal. At a price of $2,625,000 million, Charlie Coyle's contract would be far more congruent with his performance value and middle six role. Despite a lack of high-end speed, Coyle's puck-handling, puck-protection, and passing roles serve him as a great possession sustaining force with mild chance creation, bolstering New Jersey's bottom six offense while maintaining a similar defensive level and overall team dynamic. His versatility - whether playing at center or wing - will allow the Devils to hypothesize and develop a wider range of forward dynamics. New Jersey could perhaps decline this deal if they are unable to sign both Timo Meier and Jesper Bratt alongside their longer list of pending free agents.

Meanwhile, Boston acquires the RFA rights of the speedy Yegor Sharangovich and a low end 2024 draft pick, completing the three way deal with the Arizona Coyotes. If Boston can sign Yegor Sharangovich, Boston is provided with a great opportunity for enhanced bottom six offensive play driving off of the shot while providing stability for Sharangovich that will enable his speed to a greater degree.

In review, Boston trades to Arizona:

Charlie Coyle (25% retained)
2025 1st Round Pick
2024 4th Round Pick

in exchange for:

Jack McBain

Arizona trades to New Jersey:
Charlie Coyle (25 percent retained)
2024 4th Round Pick

in exchange for:

Future Considerations

New Jersey trades to Boston:

Yegor Sharangovich
2024 5th Round Pick

in exchange for:

2024 6th Round Pick
NJD
  1. Coyle, Charlie
  2. 2024 4th round pick (BOS)
  3. 2024 6th round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Future Considerations received from the Arizona Coyotes (alongside all other assets in this deal aside from the 2024 sixth round pick).
4.
BOS
  1. 2023 5th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
Boston will be forced to scourge for any assets in any hypothetical Derek Forbort trade; his cap hit of three million per season far exceeds his impact as a good defensive zone, third pair defender. Chicago is more likely to accept a contract of this sort as a team entirely committed to a difficult era of hockey. However, a rebuttal to this trade proposal lies in the trading strategy of the Blackhawks and their desire for acquiring high draft stock as a deep rebuilding team, rather than sending picks away (especially in the context of receiving a player of Forbort's age, caphit, and caliber in exchange). Overall, a trade such as this would be quite the generous exchange for the Bruins.

Modification #1:
Derek Forbort's performance and financial attractiveness is far lower than originally projected. This modified deal sees a draft pick packaged in exchange for Blackhawks prospect Isaak Phillips, who played limited time with the club last season. Phillips was ranked the number 14 prospect in the Blackhawks system in November by the Chicago Sun Tribune, who touted his ceiling as no higher than "third-pairing."

Modification #2: Forbort is not likely to bring in any significant assets to Boston after further evaluation. Therefore, this updated trade sees Forbort's exits (alongside a fifth-round pick) in exchange for a singular low-end draft pick, effectively serving as a cap dump (primarily) for the Bruins.

Hate to point out the obvious, but the Sabres could have had Reilly for free? They're clearly not interested. A different cap crunched team might like him with retention. Or just buy him out idk.

Johansson resigned with Minny, probably why you couldn’t find him on UFA’s

Gee what do you know, Once again the $4.6 mil bonus overage has been omitted.

And if Tyler Bertuzzi was willing to sign for 1 x $5,500,000 he'd still be with Detroit not traded to Boston or be a pending UFA.

Not sure how I forgot about that really. To be fair, he was still listed as a UFA so I couldn't remember. Regardless, that'll be an easy fix for the roster. Thank you!

I intended to sign him to a multi-year contract. May have been a simple mistake I made as it was one of the first moves I made in this simulation. Should be fixed shortly.

You need to set the $83,500,000 cap-$4,500,000 bonus overage for $79,000,000 and you get a true sense with what you're working with for the season.

The overage is already accounted for by CapFriendly. Originally, I had to set it myself, but CapFriendly incoporated the overages a couple of days ago.

Also, keep in mind that this is just the first version of a simulation I'll be spending several weeks modifying. Just gauging feedback and suggestions as this will eventually be featured in an Instagram post and blog post of mine.

I mean you say Reillys value hasn't decreased from a 3rd round pick, but if a player is placed on waivers, and nobody claims him for free, you have to, at the very least, admit that he's not worth anything at 3 million. I don't know how interested the Sabres would be in Reilly, he would be yet another lefty on a team that could really use a right, and stillman likely is holding down the spot the Reilly would be shooting for (he's not beating out Samuelsson or power to state the extremely obvious). If you aren't retaining, I'm not sure you are gonna have a market.

Yeah i see that Capfirendly has accounted for the bonus overage, Normally Boston would've roughly $10,500,000 in cap space without. But now only have slightly more than $6,054,000 including the overage. Anyways Don Sweeney will have his work cut out this summer.

Quite generous indeed. Hawks graciously decline. They aren't close to being a team that trades away picks for one year pending UFA's. Hawks counter with Forbert and Boston's '23 3rd to Hawks for F/C.

Honestly, CHI declines. LHD is the last position we need to add. I don't think there is a single scenario CHI would send picks out for, aside from trading up. They'll utilize free agency, and cap dumps to get to the floor. CHI isn't going to pay for stop-gap players just to fill cap space, he definitely wouldn't be part of any long term plan, and I wouldn't bet on being able to flip him. But, I don't doubt BOS could find a team with interest. I just don't know how much... CHI would look at him as a pure cap dump.

Coyle hasn't been good enough for the Devils to do that. If Yegor gets traded, it's for picks or a better player than Coyle.

In a scenario in which Chicago counters, who do you think Chicago would offer?

I realize Forbert isn't a cap dump in the true sense, but the Hawks would look at a "cap casualty" in the same light. They won't offer anything of value. Hawks counter with Forbert and Boston's '23 3rd to Hawks for F/C or if Boston insists, a lower level prospect.

For some reason I though F/C stood for "Forward/Center" but I believe it is "Future Considerations." Wouldn't mind it from a Bruins perspective honestly.

I'll try another Bruins Hawks trade involving Forbort and observe some more Hawks-centered feedback.

Sorry, you'll need to lower your expectations. Phillips will in all likelihood be one of Chicago's 3 left shot D to start next season. Hawks left side will be Vlasic, Phillips and Tinordi. And I doubt a 4th would be enough for Hawks to take Forbert with nothing going back to Boston. Phillip's going back probably makes the pick at least a 2nd. Despite what Ben Pope of the Sun Times may have written, Isaac Phillips was a gem of a pick as a 5th rounder.
