Here's the thing--why? Why would Vancouver not want futures in their current state? They could easily ask for Nemec+, or Holtz/Casey++, and let the rebuild start for real. They could get another team's entire farm system for EP and a decent chunk for Demko. They could make their prospect pool the best in the league overnight and be the next up and coming team in a very short time.

Instead, the front office will try to retool this core with literally negative cap space. That is the saddest defense group I have ever seen, and it's not like the rest of the team has too much going for it.

Simple answer is because they're not rebuilding. Management and ownership just don't think that way.

The defense is a atrocious for sure but that top 6 up front is strong with what will be two perennial Selke candidates as your 1-2 C punch.

Defense would need a lot of work and no idea how they'd address that. Probably an OEL buyout and then free agent hunting this summer and next. They'd probably also consider moving the 11th OA or next year's 1st to address the D.
