He's not the most attractive guy with that contract but someone might bite. The rangers are gonna make moves so he might be a piece in somewhere.

I've been yelling about this since the moment it was signed. It's like it was designed to be bought out around now. 2 years of extra cap space vs his AAV and then a negligible cap hit to follow, further minimized with the cap going up. No need to trade him, especially not if it costs anything/retention.

Agreed. It’s amazing how many of us have been saying it and yet no one seems to hear/understand it.

I would take him for a 3rd or 4th if Cat goes somewhere and we get futures. Could really use him in our bottom 6

Goodrow buyout would mean paying a guy who doesn't play for you till the 2031-32 season, I don't want to pay a guy who isn't playing for the next decade. I'd rather just pay the 3/4th that probably won't turn into anything to get rid of him now no strings attached

I would take that.

Sucks to give up on Goodrow so quickly. We genuinely love his game. But the Cap crunch is a harsh reality.

Freeing up Cap space is the name of the game. For this, I would do it.

If we could unload him for a meager return, then that's the 1st option.

After that, I would take the Buyout over having to package Premium Prospects/Picks with him. Not paying other teams to take him.

You wont have to attach premium assets. Its at most a 2nd rounder (kinda doubt it would be) and even then Im fine with that. Draft picks are overvalued anyways if you look at how many 2-4th rounders make it to the NHL

Sharks really like Barabanov and have a logjam at LD (even though Jones is pretty good).

What about Cuylle and McConnell-Barker instead of the 2nd?

Nah. Rangers would look elsewhere, then.

Even though he's a completely different player, we could probably grab Nino from Winnipeg at half retention for a 2nd. Just to spitball.

Makes sense. Barbanov might be a good fit on the Rangers especially with salary retained, just aren't really looking for LD prospects.

And I believe the buyout gets friendlier with each passing year...so if a team were to take him on to add playoff grit- while other young players begin to accumulate playoff experience, if that team decides they no longer need what he offers after a year or two- that team will have options with him: move him or buy him out.

Year 4 of the Buyout is the harshest, and that total is literally his current Cap hit.

Years 5-8 are just over $1.2M. Which is still a nuisance, but probably manageable when the Cap ceiling skyrockets.

If Goodrow was a UFA this summer, teams would be lining up to give him 4 years at 3.6M.
