Most likely offseason for MTL

Created by: Caufield
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 12, 2023
Published: May 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1.) Caufield gets RFA bridge, not 8 years

2.) Montreal Drafts Michkov

3.) MTL trade for either Dubois or Laffy, really depends on what position Dach will be set to play

4.) MTL trade cap, doubt they get a crazy amount of value for most of it

5.) MTL resign most of our RFAs

6.) Definitely will be 1 or 2 reserve list signings, possibly Hutson, Tuch, Pitlick

6.) MTL sign 2 NHL UFAs, one to fill a spot in depth, one to bet set in the middle 6/middle pair

Trades
1.
MTL
    Michkov, Matvei
    ANA
    1. 2023 1st round pick (MTL)
    Additional Details:
    MTL drafts Michkov 5th oa
    2.
    MTL
    1. Petersen, Cal
    2. 2023 3rd round pick (PIT)
    Additional Details:
since MTL has the cap, they trade the slightly better, slightly less expensive goalie for an additional draft pick.
    3.
    MTL
    1. Lafrenière, Alexis [RFA Rights]
    NYR
    1. Engström, Adam [Reserve List]
    2. Farrell, Sean
    3. Gurianov, Denis [RFA Rights]
    4. 2023 1st round pick (FLA)
    Additional Details:
I have a strong feeling that MTL will trade for Laffy instead of PLD this offseason

I also personally rather see a Laffy trade over a PLD trade, since PLD might have plateaued, but Laffy still has high potential. For that reason, he may be slightly more expensive, but not by much.

Gurianov is there to give a potential option for NYR as very short term replacement
    4.
    MTL
    1. 2025 3rd round pick (LAK)
    LAK
    1. Edmundson, Joel ($1,750,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
Roster spot shed from MTL. We really don't have space for Eddy and youngsters that are pretty NHL-ready. He can get a small return as a 3 LD at a place who are contending. He will be very important for any teams when it comes to playoffs
    5.
    MTL
    1. 2023 4th round pick (MIN)
    DET
    1. Kovacevic, Johnathan
    Additional Details:
Reliable 3rd RD, which is very useful, especially with his contract.

KH needs to nail this pick, drafting someone who wont be around till 2026 at the earliest doesnt help him. he'd almost certainly be fired by then if the rebuild doesnt pan out, thus the importance of 5th overall this year.

I'm at the point where I think it's more likely that Caufield signs a long-term deal than the Habs selecting Michkov at #5.
...but I pretty much agree with the rest of your description.

Get real, Peterson costs a 1st+ to dump. Monahan costs a 1st while being better and costing 4 million less

No he doesn't. Petersen's contract is structured in a way to where neither the cap hit nor actual dollars are bad if his contract is bought out next summer.

    Actual Dollars:
2023-24: $1M ($4M signing bonus paid by LA on July 1st)
    2024-25: $2M
    2025-26: $2M
    Total $5M paid by Montreal

    Cap Hits:
    2023-24: $3.85M (Buried in AHL)
    2024-25: $1M (Buyout cap hit)
    2025-26: $2M (Buyout cap hit)
    Total $6.85M over 3 years

    That doesn't cost a 1st. I'd do a 2nd.

When a team trades for a cap dump, they take the contract displayed. What they do with that contract doesn't make it easier for a team to dump it. Peterson costs a 1st+ to dump, that is simply how the cap dump market works.

I guess we'll find out. If that's the case the Kings will just keep him and buy him out themselves.

yes lets not pick the best player. Him being there or not shouldn't factor into it at all. With or without this pick the habs will have a deadly team in the years to come so why not swing for the fences

deadly is a stretch, but i dont disagree they should go bpa (michkov). But Hughes wont risk it, and there was segment on 32 thoughts that indicated that may be the case as well.
