Gee, if the Ducks would just to trade the # 2 pick...who would be under Leafs control for 7 years for Matthews straight up that would be great deal for the Leafs. All that free cap to fill the roster.

Zero chance Mathews signs in Anaheim. Even if they somehow could resign him the ducks are so far away from being competitive they couldn't afford to give up that many futures. A move like this is more needed once a team digs themselves out of a massive rebuild hole and are starting to show promise.

I am beginning to think if you were GM you'd have the team at the cap floor all the time just so you have the option of spending stupid FA money each July 1. Matthews is worth whatever he is paid, just like all the best players. You can't go wrong with paying star players star money. So long as you don't give secondary guys way too much money. The Leafs haven't and don't do that.

If he signs an 8 year deal you of course do this if you are Anaheim. Getting him without giving up McTavish or zegras is a boon. Terry is older than matthews

Agreed. And no way Leafs would retain 5.5 million. Plus Matthews is going to re-sign for more than 12.5 mill. He'll be highest paid player in the league next contract. If he does want to be traded to Anaheim, leafs might entertain Terry and a first or second. Why would leafs entertain draft picks for an established top 5 player in the league. Not to mention rocket richard trophy winner last year.
