I love Sanderson and I do think he's an elite defenseman but even as a sens fan there is no way edmonton would do this lol
As good as Draisaitl is, Ottawa is not doing that for sure.
What is important for them is to look at contracts first. Draisatil has only 2 years left before UFA. Taking him without guarantee that he would stay is way too risky. Plus, how much he'd make on his next contract? If he gets 13.5 AAV, there's a big difference in value vs his current contract
Sanderson is also not for trade, he's a pure gem with a possible 9 more years under control
Because of Draisaitl term left, this is an overpay
As crazy as it sounds, Draisaitl is also not the type of player the Sens need
Needs are :
- new GM, that's the basis for me. Someone who has a bit of foresight, can do some healthy asset management and has some grasp of how to construct a roster properly
- new coaching staff who knows what is 2-way hockey
- 1A or 1B goalie. Forsberg is good, need another guy like him. Gustavsson-Forsberg would have been a great duo!
- Defensive RHD to play with Chabot. Like Erik Karlsson before, he needs his Methot (Chychrun is a very good player but that was again, not the real need)
- 2 middle-6 forwards who are good at 2-way hockey. Nick Paul and Connor Brown should have never been traded. Alex Formenton could be back but we have no idea about it so can't expect it. Ridly Greig will develop into one but shouldn't be thrown to the wolves.
Ideally you trade DeBrincat and with the cap space and assets gained, you fill the 2 spots here more adequately :
Tkachuk - Stutzle - ??????
?????? - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Giroux
