This trade would have to include whoever you draft in this draft.

I like the idea of Murphy to CBJ in general. He would be a good mentor for your D core, is from CBJ, and while still a good player he doesn’t fit our competitive timeline. I’m not sure about the other pieces but I would target the LAK 1st.

TOR would and should be asking for CBJ's 2023 1st.

I feel like if this team ends up winning the lottery, they shouldn't get to draft 1st OV. So, a more reasonable protection imo is top 5 or 10 for the 2024 pick and an unprotected 2025 pick.

I think even two unprotected picks might be reasonable considering there is an extension in place, but that would depend on if there are other options/offers for the Leafs.

From a CBJ fan, yes, I agree. Probably something more like Johnson, this year's 1st, and Mateychuk, plus.

Matthews is worth a hefty return but that's too much for CBJ. And if he's willing to sign long-term with the Jackets, why send all that capital to Toronto when he'll be unrestricted at seasons end?

That would be a coup for the Leafs. Jackets gonna be getting a legit top-line center prospect. I think Jarmo rejects this trade as is and scoffs at the idea of sending the third overall in an extremely talented top of the draft.

Think any deal involving Matthews to Columbus starts and ends with a minimum of Jiricek and and this years first, and that’s bare minimum.

Oh I forgot, despite being a top 3 player in the world, he doesn't have much value. Just stuff you are fine giving up.

You Leafs fans just aren’t realistic. Johnson is a budding star possible superstar. The Jackets can’t give up the 3OA while giving up Johnson. And as far Jiricek goes that won’t happen. Mateychuk is a very good defensive prospect. Matthews isn’t McDavid. McDavid could get something like that but Matthews is a potential UFA. There is no way for the Leafs to win a Matthews trade right now. However, maybe over time the trade evens out.

Jarmo will not move the 3OA. The idea of the trade is to use the depth on the wings to facilitate C depth. Moving that pick would make a trade for Matthews meaningless. Jarmo is smarter than that.

Looks like there is room for another impact D. Spitballing: EK65, McDonaugh, Barrie, Parayko. I like Murphy but he's not a top pair guy. Maybe Graves as UFA

My oh my, aren't we touchy? Come down from your roost atop Mount Maple Leaf and take a deep breath as the air is getting way too poisonous.

I said Matthew is worth a hefty return, what more do you want?

Seriously though, when has a player like Matthews been traded? In the modern era? He would be the biggest piece traded in well over a decade. And you guys think he's going to get below average rental prices. This is ridiculous. Him, Nylander and Marner would all bring back major returns.

Unless of course Shanahan hires a moron.

Gretzky (along with McSorley and Krushelnyski) was traded for the equivalent of 5 first rounders in 1988. In his nine NHL seasons before the trade he'd scored 582 goals and added 1,086 assists for a total of 1,669 points in 696 games for an average of 2.40 points/game while winning the Art Ross Trophy seven of those nine seasons. He'd won four Stanley Cups, two Conn Smythe trophies and had won the Hart eight of his nine NHL seasons.

This trade has Columbus giving up the equivalent of five first rounders plus a good, young, cost-controlled winger in Benstrom. Is a pending UFA like Mattews worth that much? To some team, maybe. But I just don't think Jarmo would trade that much for him, especially when he has the third overall pick in a strong draft that will more than likely yield a top-line center in either Carlsson or Smith.

The Leafs can throw in Schenn as well. That's a former 1st rounder which apparently means a tonne. There are good pieces here for sure. But nothing here will ever be close to Matthews. And this pending UFA **** is just annoying, teams trading for him will be given permission to talk extension. The teams negotiating could try to get TO to sign him for 8 years and then trade for an extra year of term but it's going to be a crazy cost to acquire him. He's 25 years old, a Hart winner and 2 time rocket winner.

And guys on here want to give up a couple mid to late 1sts, their 3rd best prospect and a 3rd and think that's somehow a fair deal.

Talents like Matthews being traded rarely get a return worthy of their status. He's a great goal-scorer, in fact tops in the in both goals (299) and goals/game average (1.62) since he entered the league, not so much on the assist side as he's 11th in points and points/game average. But even so, he should get more than Eichel, which amounted to 3 firsts rounders and a second, which was pretty hefty considering the drama surrounding his exit from Buffalo.

Having said that, a talent is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay. My sense is that it will be in the four first rounders area, and that's if he's traded at all. Too many variables at this point in time to even consider what the return might be either this off season, TDL, or next off season and therefore I'm just not going to spend any more time in the realm of the hypothetical.

I'll stick by a return of the equivalent of four first rounders give or take.

The last word is yours.
