The CGY/FLA trade has zero relation to your Columbus deal here. Tkachuk wasn't a rental in case you weren't aware. Columbus doesn't consider that

Toffoli is worth much more than that

Canes accept that. I doubt that Calgary would, but I would be willing to add a 2nd or 3rd to get the trade done. Decent comparable would be Arvidsson to LA

Tkachuk had one year left under contract and wasn't a 1 year rental BECAUSE of the sign and trade. Same principle here if CGY extends Lindholm and Hanifin. And that is absolutely in the neighborhood of what Toffoli is worth. Maybe add a B level prospect or mid to late round pick. They paid a late round 1st to acquire him with 2.25 years left on his deal.

No it doesn't. Tkachuk wasn't actually under contract at all but Calgary held his rights as an RFA. Due to rules implemented during covid Calgary is the only team that could sign Tkachuk to an 8 year deal and thus Florida paid premium for that 8th year.

This does not apply at all to Lindholm or Hanifin as any team that acquires them prior to next years TDL is capable if signing them to an 8 year extension. Their trade value is purely as rentals as there is no benefit to the acquiring team to have them extended prior to a trade

As for Toffoli he absolutely easily returns a 1st+ if moved at the deadline. Especially if retained

The analogy here would be that the 3OA is Tkachuk.

Calgary traded for 2 expiring contracts and then signed them.

Hanifin is probably even with Weegar.
Lindholm doesn't have as good of seasons as Huberdeau though he plays the better position and is better under the hood. Still, 100+ point player is a bit different.

Carlsson, or whoever you are picking third, has a comparable value to Tkachuck based on prospect cohorts. They also have more considerable risk but also 0 cap hit for at least 3 years and team control for the next 7 at least.

Then, CBJ is adding Sillinger, Roslovic and more pieces? Sure we're getting Markstrom but we'll be completely capped. Not totally sure that value checks out.

Not worth putting too much effort in, CBJ isn't trading 3OA without getting a single asset of similar value. That's a very short list of players.

The old trick of trying to trade upcoming UFAs and expecting big value in return. The third overall and more for two expiring contracts and an iffy goalie contract? CBJ spends 13m on other players and keeps their third overall.

By the way, I'll maintain the Flames did a good job in the Tkachuk trade.....one year of Huberdeau, Weager and first for one year of Tkachuk. Flames made the massive mistake by extending two 30 year old for eight years each at a 17.25m per season

I think the easiest way to think of the Tkachuk trade for Florida is like a dynasty fantasy football trade smart managers make all the time.

Trade out your very high production, aging asset, add some quality pieces on top to make a package, and bring in a guy with roughly similar output who's several years younger to keep youth on your team and have better longevity.

Obviously there's other factors in an irl trade (contracts being the major one, but also things like Tkachuk's intangibles, how all the players fit with new teams, ect). I feel like Calgary did very well in the trade itself. Now maybe a better GM is able to get better values on the extentions, either money or length wise, but I really don't see how anyone didn't see the reasoning for both sides whe it was made.
