Trying to move the needle

Created by: MoForNorris
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There is a couple things I'm trying to do here

1. Utilizing that cap space to a certain point, that means taking somewhat advantage of the Canucks situation and getting a good player + higher pick, and taking a risky gamble

2. With Murray being the risky gamble, I also wanted to setup something in the AHL for introducing Cossa to a better league aswell. This means bringing in a goalie that can play in the NHL if necessary but also not affect the AHL's veteran rule.

3. Moving the needle obviously, but this is still a hypothetical if he requests the trade out of Arizona to get Keller. Also getting a proper 2nd pairing RHD, Chiarot isn't it I'm sorry to say. I know there is a lot of cap space BUT Raymond and Mo are RFAs next offseason and there will be a huge incline in salary, preparing somewhat properly.

4. Sign free agents to fill the holes, not sure on the exact value on some contracts but it's just a rough design.

5. Draft a top 6 right shot at the 2023 draft, that to me is Ryan Leonard. Maybe you don't trade for Fabbro and sign a UFA and get trade up to 7th with assets from Kubalik to make it happen.

6. Tyler Motte to me is not a for sure thing but there could be interest. Maybe drop Fabbri to the 4th or trade him, man plays with a passion you love to see it. Bring up Mazur if he is 100% ready, personally think he's out future 2nd line LW.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Garland, Conor
  2. 2023 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Canucks desperately need cap space, they'll have about 4 mil from this trade. They'll have to drop down by 6 picks though.
VAN
  1. 2023 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Red Wings get a right shot winger who can play on their third line and has term. Could be moved very easily down the road if necessary.
2.
DET
  1. Murray, Matt
  2. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Murray has to waive M-NTC in order for this to work. But Toronto drops to 43rd from 28th to get rid of Murray.
TOR
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Maybe they get a goalie who gets regularly injured but that first round pick is what makes it happen to get who they want with another move.
3.
DET
  1. Keller, Clayton
Additional Details:
One if the not most wanted players by trade this offseason. This will give the Red Wings a huge jump on their left wing which they desperately need.
ARI
  1. Berggren, Jonatan
  2. Chiarot, Ben
  3. Johansson, Albert
  4. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
  5. 2023 1st round pick (VAN)
  6. 2023 2nd round pick (STL)
  7. 2024 1st round pick (BOS)
  8. 2025 4th round pick (BOS)
  9. 2025 7th round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
2024 1st round pick is a conditional, the lower first will be awarded to Arizona and are both top 10 protected. Arizona is awarded the higher 2025 1st round pick if a condition occurs.

Coyotes get a defensive prospect which they need and a young NHL player.

2023 2nd round pick is to get rid of Chiarot if he waives his M-NTC. Sorry fellow Red Wings fans but it is 100% for the better.
4.
DET
  1. Fabbro, Dante
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Not sure who plays less minutes, Fabbro or Foote but those are the targets. I compare them both somewhat to what happened with Jake Walman, more ice time and they can break out. Maybe not first pairing but still a jump is going to help. Nashville also jumps up in the 3rd round.
NSH
  1. Kubalik, Dominik
  2. Zadina, Filip
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Kubalik had 20 goals this past season and was named to the IIHF WC All Star Team, I know the tournament isn't filled with superstars but is still a great accomplishment. If you really want, Detroit could keep Zadina as a 4th liner but likely is to get moved. Detroit also drops back in the pick swap in the 3rd round.
5.
DET
  1. Smith, Givani [RFA Rights]
  2. 2024 5th round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Do argue trading him was a mistake of Yzerman's. Bring him back and play him as a 4th liner/13th forward.
FLA
  1. 2024 4th round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
dropping back 1 round is fine, assuming it's 20 picks max.

Fabbro was really good in 21-22 but struggled this yr, not sure if the Preds want to sell low on him right now. I think the trade is completely fair if they are willing to part with Fabbro

I think DET could get a later rd pick (4th or 5th) in the Murray deal as well - Love the concept of that deal

Garland I could see being extremely undervalued in the trade market like Bjorkstrand last offseason, Prob a deal like that where DET lands an amazing two way wing in Garland at a cheap price

Van easily passes. Garland is not a cap dump like this. Van doesn't pay to move him.

Canucks decline. They aren't paying to dump Garland, he isn't a cap dump.

Fabbro was pretty bad to start this year, but I think he was playing the best hockey I’ve seen him play by the end of the year when Josi (and others) were out. I doubt Nashville would sell low on him to move him right now considering he signed a one year extension a few months ago. This will be a big year for him.
