1 million in cap space is not enough to make you team better, or to gain picks by weapon using cap space.

So the Canucks are supposed to pay assets to trade one of their good player like people on this site have been suggesting? I fail to see how that helps make the team better. That’s a poor argument. Paying to trade players just to take cap dumps from other teams is completely counterproductive The GM has already publicly said they aren’t making moves for short term gain.

I'm pretty sure it's because you are relying on Pearson and Poolman being LTIRetired. Even if it looks likely that is the case, there is still no guarantee there.

I think Van would trade a 3rd to get rid of Garland.
Boeser is not a dump
Miller is not a dump (but should be traded IMO)

Teams need to be cap compliant before LTIR kicks in during the season. Pearson and Poolman have to fit under the cap before they can be put on IR. No idea what the penalty is for not being compliant at the start of the year is though.

In case you've missed it, a lot of people have been proposing that the Canucks use their 1st round pick to move contracts and create cap space since they assume we are over the cap.

This is technically true, but in reality it's just paperwork. It has never been an issue ever and shouldn't be brought up. Look at all the Leafs teams who relied on LTIRetirement. No issues at all.

Well in the 1% chance of them somehow healing from career ending injuries, then we can have a different conversation

Current Canucks management team is good at maneuvering around the cap. It’s how they got the infamous $0 in cap space last season

I think they’ll be just fine

Well they aren’t over the cap if they want to put a very underwhelming team together. But for being such an underwhelming team you’d like to have a lot more cap space for the trade deadline. 🤷‍♂️

the real question is do they want to run that team again next season... if they do, yikes!

teams can use LTIR during the offseason, but often wait until the very last minute and do a bunch of paper transactions to have the maximum amount of space possible. And while I agree it is almost certain neither of them comes back, I am pretty sure that is why capfriendly says they are technically over the cap for next year.

Using assets to dump good players like people have been proposing here does the exact opposite of that. I’m showing how silly it is to think the Canucks will pay a first round pick to dump a good player like Garland

Well it makes no sense to dump a good player while paying a top asset to do so. People seem to think the Canucks need to pay a first round pick to dump guys like Boeser and Garland when it makes the team worse now, and in the future. Also, the UFA pool this year is extremely weak. Not even worth opening up cap space this season anyway if it means losing good assets

I don’t think it would take a high pick to dump Garland or a pick at all. I think it would be smarter for Vancouver to use a high pick to dump Myers over Garland. I just don’t know any teams that would particularly want him though.
