Pens decline.

Too big a drop to dump Granlund.

Granlund and #14 or 19th seems to work for both.

10M in cap dumps over two years, hawks would need more than 5 draft slots

I'd hope the hawks stay far away from OEL. Shorter term cap dumps are fine but I wouldn't want anything more than two years. Cap space isn't an issue but cap space over time is

Gudas probably won't take a one-year deal, for that little as well. Besides, the Hawks have the poor man's version of him in Tinordi. I think you're overpaying a little for OEL, but it's not unreasonable. I think the second draft pick in the Toronto and Pittsburgh deals is a little too much. Both are cap dumps and the Hawks don't need to give up more than the first picks in those deals.

Pass on that PIT trade. $11M owed for 5 slots??? Clear L for the Hawks.

Take out Murphy and I still wouldn't do that VAN trade.

Four years will be fine. Just think about it. Line up when players are coming up and will be due their next contracts. Even after Reichel and Bedard get their raises, CHI will still have PLENTY of space. And after Bedard gets his that will leave one year on the books for OEL, where he can serve as a #7, be bought out, or sit on IR/LTIR. Also he is a leader and a veteran that wouldn't be bad for the youngins. It is well worth the 11th overall plus whatever other pieces it takes to get it done, IMHO.

I definitely wouldn't send Murphy or the 1st and 2nd back though.

That Vancouver trade is awful for the Hawks. They take on $11m in cap for 3 years and give up Murphy and a 2nd for #11? No thanks. That's just too rich.

Not sure why Hawks are giving up two picks in the Murray trade? That's an overpay.

Canucks should consider. OEL is the only player they should potentially use pick 11 to dump.

I'd hope within 4 years the hawks would be using that cap to make win now moves and not for a 35 year old OEL who likley isn't an NHL level dman by then

I doubt they ever go out of their way to do "win now" moves, seems they are pretty adamant about building from within. At least not that soon. But even if they do, it should be more than simple enough to work around his cap hit for a year or two. The 11th overall pick could mean bringing in one of Reinbacher, Moore, Barlow, Danielson, Willander, etc. Not sure how much you have been scouting this year, but any one of those players (plus whatever else we get to take him) would be well worth it for the long term success of CHI. The buyout cap hit with one year left on his deal is $4.2M for one year and then $1.5M for the second year, which reduces his cap hit by a little more than $3M. Same for two years but double the term. It is a more than maneuverable move to add a very good piece to our rebuild.

I just think there's a way to get higher than 19 in the draft without taking OEL, if even if there isn't you're still getting an impact player at 19. In that 11-19 range i'm looking at a guy like Mathew Wood or Samuel Honzek. I see the hawks trying to add some size to a F group that really needs it

I would like to reiterate that I am not advocating for sending Murphy or ANY picks back to VAN. But taking on OEL for that 11th OA (plus) while NOT giving up the 19th is a no brainer, IMO. I would also like to add size like Wood, Barlow, Honzek, and/or Danielson. With both the 11th and 19th OA picks we could add two of them, or one of them and a Moore/Yager/etc. None of those guys are coming directly to the NHL, either. Which means if they come up for the 24-25 season, their ELC's will end at the same time as OEL's contract and CHI will all of a sudden have $7.26M in cap space to resign them and maybe even bring in another player. Same with guys like Nazar, Korchinski, etc. OEL's contract will fall of just in time for raises to start happening and the "win now" moves to begin. For the sake of the rebuild, this is a no brainer, and I'm not sure why so many people are so adamantly against OEL. I promise you if we did that and ended up with a guy like Moore with that pick, you and everyone else will be singing KD's praises in a couple years about it.
