He signed for less than his qualifying offer, so he probably would have become a UFA if he didn’t sign it, and the last year of his Toronto contract guaranteed him NHL money even if he was in the minors, which this one doesn’t, so I don’t think it’s a big win for him, but he probably figures that by staying with Chicago he has a reasonable chance of sticking with the NHL team, which could lead to a better deal next summer.
