K-Dev does every team volume 5 Calgary

Created by: KDev
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2023
Published: Jun. 25, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Genuinely feel bad for the fans here with so many players rumored to not want to extend. Regardless I don’t think they are terribly off. Clean out the house of players who aren’t invested and get to work.

Strengths: depth, top 4D
Weaknesses: high end prospects, reputation

Calgary needs a bounce back season from Huberdeau if they have any interest in making the playoffs. We don’t need 100+ from him but at least getting around 90 should help. I think the change behind the bench will help with moral and hopefully some of the young guys like Zary and Coronato can make an impact. Calgary is in a weird position because they do need to shave some of the bad energy off the team but they may be better off holding off on some players closer to the deadline. This off-season I think Hanifan and Toffoli probably get traded. Lindholm is 50/50 because there is still the hope he will resign. I think Backlund is good self rental and if he keeps playing like a Selke guy he can fetch a pretty penny at the tdl.

This is a lot of roster movement I am proposing and I’m not sure Calgary will be this aggressive but I think the roster I’ve assembled can definitely compete and I think this shows that even with a lot of the roster wanting out, it’s not the end of the world.

Calgary fans and others, let me know what you all think! Again, I genuinely put time and thought into each and every move and signing and try to make these as realistic as I can.

My prediction: 5th in the Pacific

Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Duclair, Anthony
  2. Samoskevich, Mackie
Additional Details:
Why Florida does this:
with Ekblad and Montour missing significant time next season, Florida desperately needs defenseman. They get Hanifan for under 5 without losing a significant piece of the Stanley cup final roster.
FLA
  1. Hanifin, Noah
Additional Details:
Why Calgary does this:

Calgary gets a solid middle 6 guy that they should be able to extend and a former 1st round pick that just had an excellent season in NCAA.
2.
CGY
  1. Granlund, Mikael
  2. Smith, Ty [RFA Rights]
  3. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Why Pittsburgh does this:

They get Toffoli off a career year who should be able to fit perfectly with Syd or Malkin as well as a cheap middle 6 army knife for depth. They are also able to shed Granlunds contract
PIT
  1. Dubé, Dillon
  2. Toffoli, Tyler
Additional Details:
Calgary gets a former 1st round defender who had a great rookie season but has struggled a bit the past 2 years. The hope is he rounds out the dcore as 3RD and QBs pp2. They also get a great pick in this years draft at #14 and a 2nd next year.
3.
CGY
  1. Chesley, Ryan [Reserve List]
  2. Dowd, Nic
  3. 2024 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Why Washington does this:

They want to get back in the playoffs. It also sounds like they don’t want to move #8. In acquiring Lindholm they hope he can be their missing piece to a potent top6 again
WSH
  1. Lindholm, Elias
Additional Details:
Why Calgary does:

They get a really good defensive D prospect (whom I’m a huge fan of), another great defensive center for their roster to replace Backlund and a 1st for next year.
4.
CGY
  1. Batherson, Drake
  2. 2024 4th round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Why Ottowa does this:

They get a young goalie that has starter potential, one of the absolute best defensive centers in the league for super cheap and a couple draft picks they can use flip for a replacement.
OTT
  1. Backlund, Mikael ($2,675,000 retained)
  2. Vladar, Daniel
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
  4. 2024 3rd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Why Calgary does this:

It’s a risky move but the idea is to get a cost controlled player for multiple years you can throw in the top 6 and not worry about (assuming the hockey Canada scandal doesn’t involve him).

Washington declines. We’re not going to mortgage the future, trade a likely High 1st (possible Lottery Pick), and trade an ideal 4th line Center on the hope that Lindholm can be “the missing piece to a potent Top 6.”

Ottawa declines.

Drake is on a really good deal for a few years, and Ott needs him, especially with ABD going.

Ott already has "goalie prospects with starter potential", they need to a proven starter. And they're set at center with Stu, Norris, Pinto, Kastelic. No need for one year of Backlund

I will say that I appreciate the effort put in here, makes it easier to see where you’re coming from.
I think the Florida trade is good for both teams.
I think the Pens trade would have to be 24 1st+Smith for Toffoli. 24 1st would likely be later than 2023 1st, but I’m all for them getting a 23 1st and a player for Toffoli.
Flames should pass on that Caps trade, I think there will be better offers.
I can’t see Ottawa trading Batherson for Backlund and Vladar

I love Backlund and would take him without a problem even at 100% but by sending Batherson the other way? No way Jose

Sens keep the guy who is 9 years younger, has 4 more years left on a steal of a contract vs a guy who is UFA to be.

Vladar and the picks are a detail here, we don't care that much about Vladar...

Not only the value is completely OFF, but this doesn't make any lick of sense for Ottawa

There's 2 positions Ottawa has absolutely ZERO need for the foreseeable future : Center and LD

Centers : Stutzle - Norris - Pinto - Kastelic (Greig and Ostapchuk are also centers) ++

LHDs : Chabot, Sanderson, Chychrun, Brannstrom, Kleven ++

tbh I'm just personally not at all a fan of Batherson and would be completely fine trading him, and Backlund is obviously a very good defensive centre. It's just not a position of need for Ottawa and if the Sens were interested in Vladar (which I wouldn't complain about, I like the idea of him in tandem with Forsberg), they'd be able to get him for cheaper.

They will if they move Kuznetsov or Mantha

If it means we’re not overpaying for aging vets like Lindholm I’m not sad about it.

kuznetsov is 31, scores almost as much (or more) than Lindholm and doesn’t cost us a 1st nor Top Prospect to acquire. The Caps are not going to be paying that package for a player that is on record that he won’t re-sign in Calgary. The Caps are picking 8th Overall this year with no assurance they’ll be better next year. The time for trading for 28 year olds was about five years ago. The Caps need to be focused on getting younger players through the draft, not expensive vets through trades.

Yeah don’t want to overpay for older guys either. Was hoping to bring in some young talent in the retool but wasn’t too realistic.
