Geez I'm all over the place. I've been hearing for the past few months how Yamamoto wouldn't be back so I assumed he was an RFA, regardless, Edmonton didn't want him back.
Kostin is asking for a lot of money apparently, and clearly Edmonton didn't want to give it to him.

Haha no worries at all man, I was just being cheeky. I understand the situation in EDM I just figured Yamo would have at least a bit of value, I really like him as a player! Given the market and how valuable cap space is, I guess I shouldn't be as surprised as I was at this deal.

But I don't think he meant the trade deadline. I'm pretty sure he meant by noon July 1st, which is the deadline for qualifying offers for RFAs (not fictional). So he was right about Klostin being UFA if not qualified, but Yam is still under contract this year. A little preemptive stating he wouldn't be qualified by Detroit next year.

yamamoto had literally no value, and a bad injury history. I don't really see him bouncing back to his potential from 2019, and if he does then good on him Kostin wanted way to much and has offers from the khl, so I'm glad ken didn't overpay him.

How is this a fleecing? I'm not a fan of Yamamoto but he is a righty and Edmonton gets some much needed cap space. I do think Detroit came out on top with this trade but it isn't as one sided as you think.

Makes sense for Edmonton, they need the cap space to re-sign Bouchard and nobody is taking cap this summer. Too bad about Kostin, he's in Moscow and talking to Russian teams right now. He'll likely come back to the NHL, but Edmonton couldn't risk a generous arbitration award so they weren't going to qualify him anyhow. He would've been a UFA by Saturday.

Nice freebies for Detroit though. Both guys can play and Kostin has the power forward thing going on. Edmonton fans will miss both.

Cap flexibility, it's a thing. I guess it's the price to pay for having a contender and having a young defenseman break out in the playoffs. Good problems to have.

You're an Oilers fan so you know what I'm talking about here. Clearly I had my facts mixed up, but Yamamoto wasn't worth what you were paying for him, and Kostin isn't worth what he's asking for on his next contract. That's why they were both traded.

Yamo was a sunk cost. Klim is a dime a dozen bottom 6. Lebrun now reporting that Connor Brown is almost a done deal on Saturday at less than half Yamo's AAV. This is win-win deal. Brown is versatile as hell, finishing isn't great but its a ton better than stone hands Yamo. Brown is just a better version of Foegele which is badly needed after Vegas depth was the reason they didnt win a Cup this year!

Technically true, yes. Yamamoto is under contract for 1 more year and Kostin is an RFA.

However, due to Kostin's contract as and his arbitration rights, Edmonton wasn't going to qualify him - he would have become a UFA on Saturday if this trade didn't happen. They simply couldn't risk him being awarded $1.75 - 2M in arbitration. So from their perspective, they weren't giving away much when they included him in the trade. From Yzerman's side it was a good move because Detroit can afford an award like that.

Also, it should be noted that Kostin is in Russia right now listening to offers from KHL clubs. So Detroit may end up with just 1 year of Yamamoto from this deal.

It's a lesser of two evils deal. If Detroit didn't step up Edmonton would have bought out Yamamoto and not qualified Kostin, leaving both men as UFA's by Saturday. This is cheaper, even if Detroit is the only team to come out of the deal with upside (unless you count "cap space to sign Bouchard" as upside). I can understand hating the deal, but it was the right move under the circumstances.
