Defensive Overhaul

Created by: leaferfarts
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 5, 2023
Published: Jul. 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs could seriously upgrade in defensive size and stability. We saw how important length/size is with Vegas' winning d-core.

Connor Murphy (6'4), Klingberg (6'3), Hanifin (6'3), McCabe (6'2), Timmins (6'2), Reilly (6'1)

Sacrificing the offensive upside of Jarnkrok, but worth it for the defensive stability IMO. Boston is looking for scoring support after losing Bergeron, Krecji, Bertuzzi.

This allows leafs to keep core 4 forwards + offensive upside with Knies, Robertson, Bertuzzi, Domi to replace losing Bunting, Jarnkrok

Edmonton declines. They have no cap space.

The madness about the Leafs having bad Dmen continues. Crazy to trade Liljegren and more for one year of Hanifan. Hawks aren't doing that trade.

Murphy on his own, no retention costs 2nd/prospect or late first. Murphy with retention costs first plus. Dumping Murray costs a first. Value is not there for the hawks.

Boston can't take the cap on without moving something else out and doubt at this point they want to move picks unless it's for a 1C

ah yes, Chicago would never take a 1st rounder in the midst of a rebuild.

they could recoup those picks in the future if they desperately needed them. I think they are simply looking for some scorers now that bertuzzi is out.
Jarnkrok scored 20 goals last year, not too bad.

I'd personally take Hanifin over Lili. I just think size and heaviness is a non negotiable in the playoffs, and Lili shrinks in the playoffs imo.

also, way more offensive upside with Klingberg, really reduces the attractiveness of Lili this season. he's probably not seeing another power play minute

We will take a 1st, but that get's you Murphy retained, or dump Murray with a bit of change back to Toronto. It doesn't get you both.

???? Liljegren didn't see that much PP last season due to reason that Reilly takes most of as the Dman on the PP. Gee, Liljegren played most of his minutes at even strength.....18 minutes a game. Don't know how that deters from this value. How much PP time will Hanifan get if Reilly stays on the PP?
No, logic if Hanifan isn't resigning with Calgary to think the he wants or the Leafs have the cap for him next season. Teams aren't paying anything to acquire Brodie.

Buyout window is closed. Your cost to move him has gone up because of this.

It's not a question of liking a player more than other. It's fitting into the cap, and years of control, and a filing a necessary position in this case RHD.
