Taking a chance on Zadina

Created by: History65
Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 4, 2023
Published: Jul. 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Zadina - low risk, low reward. See if a Czech line with him would work.

Hanifin gives Boston the best top 4 defense in the league (or close to it). Might have to add a prospect going back to Calgary.

Rather take someone that takes on a similar cap amount rather than Forbort who plays a position we don't need and costs almost double.

The reason he likely cleared waivers is because he's owed $4.5 million in real money over the next two years. This is more than what his actual cap hit is.

I’d imagine Zboril for Zadina would work. 2 flops needing a change of scenery. Frankly i’d rather have Zboril though.

Flames will get better offers.

When a player is claimed off waivers they have to take on the full contract and the player has to stay on the roster. Moving he off the roster he would to go through waivers and Zadina just isn't good enough for a team to lock up a roster spot before camp. He will probably be traded as we get closer to the start of the season.

I'm aware of what happens when a player is claimed off waivers. Even still a team could claim him, get a look at him through camp. If they didn't like what they saw then they'd first have to offer him back to DET and if they declined they could waive him for the rest of the league to claim. What scares teams away is the real money he's owed vs what his cap hit actually is.

Bruins forward group gets much worse. You've got a guy that may or may not be good at all in the NHL, a fringe 2nd liner, a 3C and a 3LW. This is not to include Marchand possibly taking a step back. Bottom-6 is also not great. Having a great top4 D (which the Bruins already have) with a middling forward group is a big issue when trying to win.

His cap hit is $1.825 so it's only an extra $900K and it doesn't go against the cap. $900K isn't scary and most GMs wouldn't even think twice for a player they want. Besides most GMs would rather give up a 6th or 7th for a player rather than having to deal with waivers. Players getting traded after clearing waivers is very common for that reason.

Maybe $900K would be scary to Arizona given their current situation.

I agree. Trying to set them up for next off-season, when they can address the scoring.

Really? They couldn't even give him away for free. If you watched Yzerman's presser, he seems pretty pissed about the whole situation. Forbort could be a deadline flip for a pick to a team looking for PK help.

I think he gets traded for a 7th or possibly future considerations.

He was placed on waivers because Zadina wanted a chance to restart with a new team.
In his presser, he also stated that ideally he passes through waivers lol.
Forbort just makes the logjam at LD even more brutal than what it is. Guarantees absolutely none of our young guys see any time in the NHL.

It doesn't sound like much to a GM, but tell the owner you want to get a guy that will cost him an extra million then his cap and see what the owner thinks. Especially for a player that right now is a depth guy.

If you think Yzerman actually wants him back after what happened, I'll trade you McDavid for Zadina.

Have no clue what you're trying to say. Why would Yzerman have any issues with Zadina?

Yzerman signs him to a lucrative contract (which he hadn't earned). Less than a year later, tells Yzerman that he doesn't want to play for them anymore. Ties Yzerman's hands, can't give the guy away, then has to somehow welcome him back, even though he has no desire to play for Detroit.

You're parading lucrative around as if the contract isn't just 2M against the cap. To a team that has a full roster and still has 9M in capspace; that's nothing.
Even next year, with Raymond and Seider extensions, 2M isn't going to make or break anything. I'd be surprised if we're not bottom in cap hit lol.

Considering how well Zacha has played for Boston it wouldn’t shock me if they could turn Zadina into a quality player

I guess I'm just different. Wouldn't want a guy who did everything to get out of town in my locker room.

As said, he wanted out because he wanted to see if a new team would do him well. I'm sure he holds no quarrel to the team nor Yzerman.

Friedman put this out about 20 minutes ago

Zadina asked for a trade before the draft, and the Red Wings placed him on regular waivers on Tuesday. Available to any team, everyone passed. Talking with local media, Yzerman made it clear salary was the problem.

“Am I happy to put him on waivers? No. I signed him to a three-year contract a year ago because I believed that he was going to grow. The reality now is: you wanted that contract, that contract may prevent you from getting the opportunity you’re looking for in another organization.”

Is that from his latest presser? I haven't had a chance to watch it. So I apologize that was my mistake.

This is what I was referencing earlier, about Yzerman's presser. Now I guess they're getting nothing for him.
