No need for Lassi Thomson now that Detroit has drafted Sandin Pellikka. We'd rather keep Berggren.

Drop Berggren from the Detroit side and drop Thomson from Ottawa side and the deal looks fair.

Lassi was just a throw-in piece since Ottawa doesn't have a spot for him whereas Berggren would be the centre piece of the deal coming the other way. He seems to be the odd guy out with all the additions Detroit made anyway

The 1st and Berggren are mutually exclusive.

A rookie who scored goals on a rebuilding team that can’t score goals is not the guy to be traded for a different guy that scores goals. The odd man out was Zadina, followed by Kubalik, then Veleno.

if you want a 2-time 40 goal scorer you gotta give up something

A first and Kubalik then. Not trading a first AND berggren.

neihter of those pieces are worth anything. Kubalik could be okay but not a chance hes a centerpiece.

Detroit doesn't have a spot for him either. Berggren is not the odd man out. Detroit signed depth players. Fischer, Sprong, Kostin were brought in for depth.

Raymond, Larkin, Perron - 1st line
Compher, Copp, Berggren - 2nd line
Fischer, Rasmussen, Kubalik - 3rd line
Kostin, Veleno, Sprong - 4th line

Depth forwards who need to win a spot and beat a vet guy out. Zadina, Kasper, Fabbri (probably just not healthy)
Berggren is cemented in the top 9. He earned his spot last season.

no chance

You're absolutely right, there is no chance Detroit overpays for Cat. There's also no chance the Sens sign him long term. There's a very high chance the player gets exactly what he wants and hits the market as a UFA and signs in Detroit without the red wings needing to give up any assets for him, even if Ottawa trades him to another team. He's made it quite clear he wants Detroit. So why on earth would we give up a haul for a guy we can likely have for free in 2024? I'm completely fine to wait 1 year, keep Berggren and keep the 2024 BOS 1st. Ottawa doesn't have the leverage in this situation now that all 31 other teams know Cat wants out, his price drops with it. Ottawa will probably trade him at the deadline but any buyer will know he is a pure rental and won't sign long term. That means you maybe will get a late 1st at best and nothing more. similar to what NYR paid for Tarasenko at the deadline. Sens fans can cry me a river.

And I agree, but where Detroit is it doesn’t make sense, hence why there hasn’t been a trade yet. If tomorrow it’s DeBrincat for Burgers +, okay then, but personally wouldn’t love it.

Never said they were worth anything to OTT, the comment was merely a reply to OP saying JB is the odd man out in Detroit which is false. As I described, he scored goals as a rookie on a team that can’t score goals. Could and will Cat score more… yes.

Yeah but without Kane he's not doing that again.
