Let's ignore Necas and Pesce... just for a minute. That package doesn't get Slavin alone. Slavin CERTAINLY wouldn't play behind Rielly because he's better than Rielly. Let's break this package down. Giordano is 39 and a cap dump. No one else wants him, he's a 3rd pairing D man signed to play in his home town. You'd move him to clear cap, he's got minimal to no value to anyone else meaning they'd only take him to make the money work, hence cap dump. Robertson is way too injury prone to hold any value. Nylander is a great 2nd line RW. Absolutely. Likely sees a dip in production when taken away from Matthews, Tavares and company, but a very good player. Timmins is a 7th D man, but Carolina already have Coghlan and Chatfield who are around the same age, and are already arguably better. The 1st and the 3rd doesn't get Slavin.
Now, Necas for Nylander. Necas had 15 less points, but has half the cap hit, is an RFA not a UFA on expiry, is 2 years younger too. I've made the argument many times he has more value than Nylander, and while some disagree, it's certainly close enough to call a wash.
You want Pesce too? This is the kind of trade where I think Nylander would need to be Matthews for the Canes to accept. You could drop Giordano, Robertson and Timmins because the Canes would have no interest, but Pesce, Slavin and Necas is a Matthews conversation starter, not Nylander
